Well f*** a duck if Mark Arthur didn't sort the contract situation out, and also give half a shit about a lad who's wife had just lost a kid.

So glad that lowlife has left this club. The only man who could see everything from a purely business perspective, and yet drive a business into the ground by doing so  Scumbag.

Thanks for posting Rocka.

Everytime I listen to him about it I feel embarrassed about my feelings towards him at the time. I was 13 years younger than and bit naive to why footballers do what they do.

Yes I was angry with him because he was so good and my favourite player that season we went up but his reasons for leaving to me are completely understandable and I sympathise with him loads and I would have done the exact same thing in his situation even as a Forest fan.

It was a peculiar quirk of the Doughty era that we would repeatedly let decent players' contracts run down only to see them leave on a free

Far too many good players left in this fashion around that time

The first time I heard the rumour about him leaving was on the night of our promotion celebration. It's a shame that he wasn't able to make his reasons more public at the time, but it's also a shame that he went to that lot rather than another club.

He needed to be home and Forest werent offering him security at all, I actually admire Commons a bit for taking so much shit for the benefit of his family and not crowing about it at the time. Thats a real virtue and showing unimaginable resilience.

There's a reason why Azeem Rafiq has asked Marthur to stand down at Yorks CC for his handling of the racism issue there. The man only notices people when he looks down to see who he's standing on. He doesn't value people one bit, unless they pay him fortunes.

To think we could have had a long and prosperous relationship together if we operated like a normal club and treated him like the valuable asset he was.

Can't Play Left-Back
Jim Brennan, Riccy Scimeca, Jack Lester, Gareth Williams*, Kris Commons, Sammy Clingan, Kelvin Wilson, Rob Earnshaw, Joel Lynch, Luke Chambers and Garath McCleary - all first team players (or heavily used squad players) whose contracts were allowed to rundown and leave on a free, most of which had significant resale value under contract and were very difficult to replace without spending money. Not to mention Harewood being allowed to leave for a pittance because scoring 30+ goals in 18 months wasn't worth a a significantly better contract than the £2k a week he was supposedly on. Plus Wes Morgan had to be sold because again we'd let his contract rundown. In that time how many decent bosmans did sign ourselves? Commons we paid compo for, Andy Reid of course. Was Paul Gerrard a freebie? Can't think of many others. So as a transfer strategy it was absolutely nuts! In the same way that Basil Fawlty was an excellent hotel manager if weren't for those pesky guests getting in the way, Mark Arthur was a great football CEO if it weren't for footballers.

*Yes we got some compensation due to his age but he was worth more than what we got.

Thing is a fair amount of those were either on too much (Platt signings) or not worth it by the time their contract expired (Earnshaw for example) or perhaps weren't worth keeping. Commons wasn't one of them, nor was McCleary but the club was in a mess at the time with ND dying and the take over.

Commons doesn't like Megson either, does he?

I'm afraid it didn't make me change my opinion of him. Saw him opt out of too many battles when we were a struggling team.

Megson might have been a shit manager, but lets not forget he let us have a goal in the cup against Leicester after the game got called off at HT because one of their lads had had a Heart Attack or something, we still lost mind :D

The 'Megson dragged us down' argument is just revisionism ignoring the fact that things had been very wrong at the Club for the previous few years. Players having their own halftime team talks after the manager had left, stoolgate, etc. couldn't continue and Megson stopped the the rot.

We'd nearly gone bankrupt and been flirting with relegation for years before he arrived and things only improved after he had done the dirty work.

Odd thing to say we only improved after he had done the dirty work. We were 3 or 4 points off the league one relegation zone when he went, and sinking fast.

Fairer to say we only improved after he f**ked off and we started getting rid of some of the shit he lumbered us with.

What a time. What a collection.

For some reason I decided to pain myself and remind myself of this era as I was looking up a few things.

In fairness any manager could see that the squad needed replacing because of some of the characters in it, specifically disruptive influences, but this shouldn't be something Megson takes the credit for as some sort of levelling up bargain for all the stuff he did do which wasn't good, which was pretty much all the rest of it.

He could and should have kept us up that season, because we weren't that bad, and a fair amount of injuries had stopped us fielding a settled team for much of the time under Kinnear. Most of the defeats were reasonably narrow and it just needed someone to keep us tight at the back and attack teams more (we still had DJ, Taylor, King at the club) but this was made harder because Kinnear had to let Williams go and wasn't able to replace him really.

Instead we turned in some of the most abject displays ever seen by a Forest side
Coventry
Plymouth
Ipswich
QPR (where there had been reports that the players had been partying wasn't there? So Megson clearly managed to keep the discipline then?)

1 win in our last 11 games shows we really did go down without much of a fight and over the summer Megson brought more shit in and we carried on struggling
Yeovil
Oldham
I think we lost to Chester in one of the cups too

Things improved when the manager who presumably constantly berated the players, destroyed their confidence, told them they were shit etc finally left the club though it was mainly Calderwood's signings who were key - Agogo, Smith, Chambers in the first season, and we brought in McCleary, Wilson, Cohen and Davies for the 2nd, as we could progressively get rid of most of the shit Megson brought, which was pretty much all of it bar Breckin, Southall, Tyson and Grant Holt.

We also drew with Weymouth and Salisbury City in the Fa Cup around that time. The Chester loss was a hammering as well wasnt it?

Utterly grim.

We were 13th when he resigned; not waiting to be sacked and then getting paid for the following year or so.

Unlike many of our more recent managers.
