Stamenić did not play, due to a minor injury, but Chuba Akpom did, and was very very poor and ineffective, despite the fact that he faced a 19-year-old Greek CB and 20-year Nelson Abbey (who is almost certainly your player and who was very good) in the first half, and none other than Giulian Biancone in the second half. The only notable thing he did was to burst into violent protest right into the referee's face, which earned him a yellow card.If the first reports from pre-season are to be believed, Marko Stamenić is mint, with real quality on the ball, and a beast of an athlete. I may have a first glimpse on Friday, when we're playing our first friendly (probably an embarassing one, because pre-season just began, we're way behind on transfers, and we're playing against Ajax).
Memes about Chuba Akpom aside, it's encouraging to hear Nelson Abbey had a good game.Stamenić did not play, due to a minor injury, but Chuba Akpom did, and was very very poor and ineffective, despite the fact that he faced a 19-year-old Greek CB and 20-year Nelson Abbey (who is almost certainly your player and who was very good) in the first half, and none other than Giulian Biancone in the second half. Probably not be here this season IMO, but a good year at Olympiacos and I reckon he'll be here next summer.Do we reckon we might turn to him if/when we move on Worrall to come in as 5th choice?
I think he'll stay here for another year. He needs work to reach Premier level, particularly in his passing game. But the talent is certainly there.Do we reckon we might turn to him if/when we move on Worrall to come in as 5th choice?
I wondered whether he might get a loan to either the championship or even Rio Ave - you expect him to play many? Suppose Carmo has gone...I think he'll stay here for another year. He needs work to reach Premier level, particularly in his passing game. But the talent is certainly there.
Yes, I think he'll play, especially with Carmo out of the picture. The starting left CB will probably be the young Italian who's about to sign today (Lorenzo Pirola), but with the new format of the Europa League we'll be playing two matches per week most weeks.I wondered whether he might get a loan to either the championship or even Rio Ave - you expect him to play many? That's fair Otis. There is absolutely no basis for this bar a few rumours in January but wasn't it Marinakis Jnr who was all over this signing and not the aforementioned? I think his track record makes people a touch nervous. Add to that he doesn't really 'fit' the profile of players we have been targeting recently. Akpom will be 29 in October and has 4 Premier League appearances to his name, the last being a decade ago.For my part, I'm struggling to get too worked-up about his failure to make an impression during barely a handful of games on loan as a teenager almost a decade ago, so, with due acknowledgement to those on here who are so vehemently opposed to bringing this lad in, I'm more than happy to trust Syrianos, Wilson, Nuno et al on this.
If they believe he's capable of doing a job it goes without saying he'll get my full support.
I can't find an arguement against any of what you say Danga and, like you, I don't know what MM's involvement was. The point I was trying to make is that if there is a shred of truth that Akpom is a potential third striker I accept the judgement of those who will make that decision. That's fair Otis. My concern is that he's 29 in just over 2 months, and he's yet to make a significant contribution in a top-level league in his career. Unless he's a very late bloomer, there's a reason for that. For my part, I'm struggling to get too worked-up about his failure to make an impression during barely a handful of games on loan as a teenager almost a decade ago, so, with due acknowledgement to those on here who are so vehemently opposed to bringing this lad in, I'm more than happy to trust Syrianos, Wilson, Nuno et al on this.

I don't disagree with you RE, but my sole standpoint is that I have an open mind about any decision to sign him and that I'll fully accept it and support the lad if we do.My concern is that he's 29 in just over 2 months, and he's yet to make a significant contribution in a top-level league in his career. This is before we consider that a player at his age has no resale value, which is fine if the player is an elite talent like Felipe or Boly, but less so if they're a middling journeyman.
It seems like the sort of chance that a team like Luton or Ipswich might take, but not a team with big dreams that's hoping to kick on up the table in their third year back.
