I wouldnt have wanted him but I can see why the thought was that he looked like a reasonable signing in that he's better than Origi imho (Who may well still be planning on jetting to the MLS), also I do feel he's a decent player who had a stellar season in the championship and is doing OK in a decent club.

The thing is the price we were willing to pay seems odd given that 6 months ago he was available for £10m and we didn't go anywhere near him then.

He may have been a Mini Mariniakis target (The PAOK history could be a factor as two fingers to them too btw) but ultimately we didn't crap the bed and pay what they were asking so all in all I'm not overly concerned because in some way it shows learning.

At points of the first summer window it very much felt a bit like the money people of football saw us as a next best thing to Saudi for transfer fees and maybe wages too. If we've made progress then at least its something, it just feels a bit odd because we tried at a high bid for this guy and failed essentially to agree the minutiae but wouldn't go this high for the keeper position where arguably we dont have the strength in our squad in the first place like we do in attack in already having Awoniyi and Wood.

I guess at least we obviously had a ceiling on this we weren’t prepared to go above. It’s not like Mitiadis was let loose with a blank cheque. This time!

The Athletic mentioned it in passing and now its a stone cold fact
To be fair, it’s exactly the kind of dumb-f*** move you would expect.

I disagree. You are looking for improvements all the time. Getting suggestions from every part of the club is to me perfectly acceptable, but leave it to the experts on players to decide if that suggestion is right for the club.

Unilateral signings of players without any consultation with the scouts or current manager? Yeah. That is garbage and frustrating.
He should maybe stick a poll on here too, maybe a month before the next window opens. Most popular choice wins 👍

It was actually worth wading through this thread for that image Thomas. No artist captures the true spirit of Americana better than Norman Rockwell.
You're right Otis, one day I make my way over to the east coast again so I can visit the Norman Rockwell Museum.

I do chuckle at the suggestions that 29 goals in a season is a streak or a purple patch - want him or not, it's an incredible amount of goals in a year.
When it's come in a decade of football, around 370 appearances and every other season he's average less than 10 goals even in Greece, I'd say it's the definition of a purple patch.

If he goes back to doing the same I'd be more inclined to agree, but currently he's just about a goal every other game (9in 20).

I'd say 29 goals in a season (with goals continuing to flow afterward) says he's finally reached the potential that took him to Arsenal in the first place.
