I think the bizarre way in which he was signed did him no favours in the eyes of the fans.
Is he the best striker we've got at the club, would we want him to be our main first choice CF? Obviously not.

Is he a useful option off the bench and can he score much-needed goals when he comes on? Absolutely yes. Proven.

Never associated him with Shelvey. Still think he is a poor fit for our system. But if he can clear @Gyros Peter bar of 4-5 goals coming from the bench, that's more than good enough.

What I think has made him look a black sheep in many posters eyes (including mine) is the 15m. (The Carvalho curse.) But that's because we are used to championship sums where 15m is difference-maker money. In the Prem, it's hit or miss at best. If 15m got us a 4-5 goal off the bench player that is a also a positive presence in the dressing room and is not constantly broken, that's a bargain.

He isn’t a poor fit for every system we play - he’s a poor fit for our ‘away from home flat back 5’ system cos he’s not quite as strong as Taiwo with his back to goal.

In that 4231 shape we played to pen blades in to their 18 yard box, he is exactly the striker you want for that.

I never doubted him. I thought he’d turn out to be a good signing and I still think he will.

He has a track record of scoring goals and most managers talk nothing but very highly of him. For some players it just takes time for them to settle in to a new club and get to grips with a new coaches ideas. It took Taiwo a while and look at him now. Now Wood has been here and will have a clear understanding of his role & how we play I think he’ll be much more of a threat.

Shelvey is clearly a bad egg. Whilst I've been critical of the Wood signing, I've never really had him down as a bad character. His highlights reel is probably a better watch than Jonjo's too.

Hoping Wood continues to prove me wrong like last night. Even besides the goal, I was pleasantly surprised by how much better he looked than last season.

I guess when a player doesn't make an immidiate impact coupled with being one of more of

over 29 years old
seen as being on a downward trajectory career wise
Paid a lot of money for them and on big wages
Injured

Compunded with the manager picking them over someone that is more popular with the fanbase (in this case Sam Surridge last season), we do tend to write off early, take to social media to let our feelings be known about how crap they are and question the direction of the club and manager. The players must be aware of the supporters feelings

I'm so glad the Chris hasn't taken any of this fan criticism to heart and is letting his football do the talking

He isn't really a target man / hold up striker though, not in the sense that the (markedly shorter) Taiwo is. Some people on here just don't see that.

Chris is good in the air, he scored a header last night which was well taken technically, and has scored headed goals throughout his career, but he's not the kind of striker you lump it to and then he gets it and brings others in, that's Taiwo. But if you get crosses and balls into him in the box, he will create and score chances. He didn't get long last night, but he didn't do much more besides scoring, and that was a prime example of what he can do for us.

As you say, if we need someone to be active in the penalty box, and when we're pressing teams and need chances, he is perfect.

He has consistently scored goals for Burnley in the PL and scored plenty against us in the CH for his various teams ...

Exactly! Music to my ears reading that and that’s my exact opinion him. Only thing is cooper hardly ever plays that way though.

Interesting comment at the end of this one-eyed Yorkshire Post comment piece.

Interesting because it made me howl with laughter at first but on reflection there's maybe a good point there about how others see Wood's experience and ability.

Lad in front of me did a big groan - I made sure he heard me when I told my lad he'd get us the winner. We were all winners come 99 mins!

Wood will never be my player of the season but he will score more goals.

Last season, we struggled to get the ball in the box which negated Woods primary strength of being able to hit the target from close range.

Wood has good qualities and a particular set of skills which Cooper will make the most of. Not every player will suit the game plan for every match so it’s important that we have flexibility and Cooper can set us up to counter any situation.

Love the fact that he is starting to turn fans opinions of him around.
More so because I have many Kiwi friends from the north and south Islands who I converted to NFFC fans over 20 years ago.
Lost one to Arsenal but you cant win them all.
If I remember correctly we signed a young kiwi player years ago, they all got excited, it came to nothing.
So i'm getting some great interactions with my friend this season!
Long may it continue!!!!!!
