Has any player we've bought from Italy been a success?

I can think of at least 6 mega flops.

Bryan Roy
Good call.

I remember queuing up to get his autograph at the opening of a florest (maybe fruit & veg store I forget) in Beeston. I finally got to the front, handed him my lil book and he asked me where my pen was. I'd never got an autograph before so I thought the football players/celebs bought their own pens.

Managed to borrow one but looked like a right tit 😂

During Italia 90 I was out in Derby and I spotted Brian Clough stood in the doorway on a restaurant, holding one of his grandkids. I asked him for his autograph (Mr Clough, not the grandkid) and he agreed. Only trouble was, I had no pen. He wouldn't let me enter the restaurant to get one, as Nigel and the rest of the family were there. So instead I just shook his hand and chatted for a few minutes, then we continued on.
Just round the corner I found one of those tiny Argos pens on the floor. I went back eagerly but he had gone back into the restaurant and I was too scared to do anything further.

Have we ever signed an Italian that didn’t flop disastrously!
No.

This lad has flop written all over him.

In fact I've heard that he's the step-son of one of Platt's 3 Italians.

In all seriousness- I just don't think buying from Serie A works out very often for PL clubs nowadays. The pace & physicality are just so different.

Maatsen on the other hand....

Have you seen him play? Serious question
Yeah I have seen a fair bit of footage. I was out on the drink all day when I posted that Saturday so my use of the word ‘fantastic’ was slightly over the top when also factoring the cost. Excellent player, quoted prices dont excite me as much.

Chelsea apparently want silly money for him, and our earlier interest was apparently tentative. Can't see it.
I can’t either, but the price of this player is now being speculated at similar levels. Both seem steep. Although we started on this one a a loan deal I believe.

At some stage Chelsea will have to start clearing the decks, although Maatsen seems to be making a good impression on their manager.

Think they've already rejected an offer over our valuation of him. Manager has been talking him up but I suspect that's to try and drive the fee to what they want. Either way it's probably win win for Chelsea if they think he's good enough to join the squad - they either get the 20m plus they apparently want for a player in the last year of his deal or integrate him and offer a new contract.

In terms of Cambiaso, I would say he is definitely more of a winger than tradition fullback. Clearly that broadly fits them term as being a LWB, but I could never see him as a LB is a back 4. It’s all very much attack minded.

I've literally no idea what he offers, but think given our apparent 'final stages' negotiating over Jakobs it will be him.

Wonder if a player plus cash deal was mooted here involving Frueler, hence the new link with the young Juve lad which came out yesterday?
