BUPA - Alexis Sanchez

Allegedly Alexis is looking to end his career in England, with several mid-table clubs considering taking a punt. I can see this being the ‘Mariankis Marquee Signing ’ for summer 23 if it’s real

Seriously though he’s not entered by head for surely 8 years or something. Wasn’t he like 29 then?

Occasionally these sorts of signings work out but he’s not even in a position we are desperate, we have quality there already.

We also excel with quick counter attacking, not sure grandad Sanchez would bring that anymore.

Just googled him, I’d actually forgotten he was at United. I thought he’d left these shores from arsenal.

I’m not advocating it but what qualifies as “washed up”

Felipe, Aurier & Boly have been some of our best signings last year, on paper they are no different to Sanchez.

Like with every player each one is different, I don’t think it’s right to put them into specific categories.

All budgets and money talk aside - who’d you rather have to bring on, Scarpa or Alexis?

It’s actually a tougher question than I immediately thought. And that’s assuming they’re both looking for the MGW role - I didn’t realise Alexis actually generally plays as a 9 rather than a 10

False 9 isn’t it? So is in the MGW kind of position.

The age is possibly a factor of pace has been part of his game previously. Some more defensive players can probably lose pace and gain experience. Not sure if that translates in the position he plays, especially as we tend to play quick counter attacking football as our most effective attacking threat.

He’s not even 31 he is actually 34 / 35. Will be on loads of money and hasn’t played regularly in the premier league for at least 5 years.

These occasionally work out but this feels like the washed up and worrying category.

Someone mentioned Willian. He is marginally younger or was when he was signed and he’s played regularly in the prem up until he went to Fulham.

I’d say cb’s can get away with losing pace more, especially if they are big units and or haven’t relied on pace. Aurier is only 30/31 and keepers regularly go on in to their 40’s at good level. Again they aren’t reliant on pace.

The position Sanchez plays, his style and what we need does rely on pace.

Felipe is the same age but is clocking sprints the same speed as when he was 25.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, and Im fairly certain it wouldn’t work out as a transfer, but I could see the logic on a Lingard-esque one year deal

Like I said in my original post I am not advocating Sanchez, I just don't like dismissing a certain profile of player when so many have had a positive impact on our season and do across the league.

Absolutely not. Was incredible at Arsenal. Has been shit ever since though regained form with Marseille this season. No point in bringing in a 34 year old who plays in the same position as MGW and Scarpa. I really hope we don't even consider guys like him this summer.

I learned my lesson from Aurier. I was dead against his signing, but he proved me wrong in spectacular fashion. A lot of it depends on the individuals attitude and desire IMO. There are some older players out for a last payday, but there are others (Aurier, Boly, Navas, Felipe) who feel they have a point to prove and get stuck in.

Washed up,last paycheck,has-been etc talk aside I really can't see where he'd fit into your current setup.

An excellent player on his day but he's not a runner which is what Cooper wants.
