BT Sport secure champions league/europa league tv rights

I have BT Sports as its chucked in for free on our package.

I wonder how this will affect advertising.

Champions League on ITV occasionally hit 15 million+ viewers and had the potential for more.

BT Sports has around 2 million subscribers, which severely limits its reach. Even if the odd game is on for free, its not going to be often or it would defeat the point of it.

Seems a massive shame for those who only have free TV.

Maybe it will lower interest in The Champions League though, and get people more back into our own leagues.

I can't remember the last time I watched a European game.
The league format has killed it as a competition for me, well that and allowing the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed team into the CHAMPIONS league.

Even bigger blow to the people who only have free TV channels.

Jake Humphrey just tweeted.

CL & EL final & many games, including British teams at least once will be shown free to air by BT too, & it'll be cheaper to see all games..

Going to be more free games than currently according to what I've just heard on the radio.

So are BT going to do free to air games on freeview then? If they do then it makes no difference really, itv have always been crap at football coverage.

Just been on the reddit thread, BT are obliged to (EU law) to show one cl game per match day for free. Makes no difference really to what you get for free.

The coverage can't possibly be as bad as ITV.

I'm hoping BT let James Richardson have a crack at presenting it.

Still, £1bn is a huge amount of money. Sky are apparently proper pissed, according to the Graun:

I reckon it will mean more Championship/League 1 games being broadcast on Tuesday and Wednesday nights on Sky.

Its a massive loss for them though, particularly at the prices Sky charge for Sky Sports.

One thing that does suck, is that with BT Sports only having 2 channels, it means the only being able to show 2 games at a time, whereas sky shows 3 or 4, and ITV shows 1. This means over the Tuesday and Wednesday you get a choice of 7-9 games, which was great if you did not just want to want the English teams.

Now you will just get a maximum of 4

Its not a big deal, just a bit less choice and I assume most of the focus will be on British teams.

I can see why, they always thought they had more financial clout than anyone else in this country. But BT have proven them wrong, will be a massive blow to them as football is there most dominant feature across the channels. Will be intresting to see what they manage to broadcast live now in the mid weeks when the european games are being played.

Wonder if they'll keep it free if you have BT Broadband. Might persuade me to swap from Virgin. Can't be arsed to pay, though.

Not really less choice as all the games are available on the red button anyway?

All this will hopefully mean is that Andy Townsend will lose his job, which is brilliant.

BT have said before they have scope to add more Sport channels if there is a need.

I'd not be surprised to see BT Sport 3 and maybe even 4 make an appearance before this kicks off.

At least there's no more having to suffer Adrian Chiles for the pre match coverage..although, I don't know who does BT Sport yet..knowing my luck he'll sign a deal there for next season.

They're showing every match.

Sky will probably push for more live Championship games as they are often played in the same weeks as European fixtures.

The opposites true though surely as if you have real madrid v man u would make more sense to air it free cos the advertisers would chuck sloads at bt to get there ads on

But how do they show every match across 2 channels? Maybe they will add more I guess.
