Just because he is young doesn't mean he still has some way to go to reach his peak.
Progress isn't linear and some players who look like they'll be world-beaters at 20 fade into obscurity.
The £47m figure is a decent mix of ability now and potential, probably weighted 2/3rds or 3/4s to the former.
I’m so glad I didn’t know this until now. I already worry enough every time our players go downHe shattered his kneecap as a kid in the academy - probably linked to that
There are plenty at Brennan's age and younger who you'd have thought would be nailed on as a superstar but simply didn't kick on to the next level.Just because he is young doesn't mean he still has some way to go to reach his peak.

I think that's a pretty good assessment, Maxi. I'm inclined to agree. I think there's been a fair bit of 'emotional' attachment with Brennan being a local lad and academy product but the truth is that's a bloody good wedge we've got for a player who has had but one good season in the Championship and one reasonable season in the EPL.I've suggested the same before.
Don't think we were that close to FFP. We probably had another £20m-£30m we might have spent if we didn't sell Johnson, but what the sale did enable was that flurry of players on deadline day which set us back an additional £60m or so, plus associated wages.
Think that was always the plan too. Elanga clearly the like for like Johnson replacement, albeit maybe considered more the assister rather than goalscorer. Add CHO into the mixer and you can quite clearly see a route to a 4231 (Yates and Sangare holding with Elanga, MGW and CHO become Awoniyi) which we didn't have before, and we've still got the ability to play all the formations we played last season too.
Long story short, I think Forest decided that we could replace Johnson's qualities at a fraction of the cost whilst using the money headroom to bring in players that could see us play in more ways than we previously could.
Potentially, although less sure of this one, the club thought Johnson may have reached his ceiling so cashed in 'potential ' that didn't exist in their minds. Let's face it, he's not getting any faster, his first time finishing is probably not getting any better either because that's pretty good. The elements of his game he needs to improve are the off the ball runs and decision making and frankly he's not improved massively on either since Cooper first came in.
Maybe Johnson doesn't actually get any better from here. Maybe he's a solid PL squad player but that's it. Maybe £47m will turn out to be a cracking piece of business. Won't be easily accepted on here but neither was the Oli Burke sale at the time and hindsight proved that sale a wonderful piece of business. Maybe Johnson sale will eclipse that.
Aye, same here.I’m so glad I didn’t know this until now. I already worry enough every time our players go down
Well, Brentford clearly did.The way the speculation about him leaving started pretty much as soon as last season ended tells me that the club let it be known that he was available and were happy to sit back and see what was offered by deadline day.
Surely no-one actually thought he was going to Brentford though

Love the word Pissant.... underrated and underused.Well, Brentford clearly did.
The absolute pissants.
Correct.I might be being overly sensitive but these sort of discussions are bloody annoying.
Firstly there is an insinuation that he is now somehow going to fulfill his potential because he's moved to a club that hasn't won any domestic honours since 2008.
Secondly they discuss him essentially outgrowing Forest and now has made it with a chance at the big time because he's moved to a club who haven't won any domestic honours since 2008.
Don't get me wrong, I loved having him at Forest and I'm glad he moved to a club higher up the reputational ladder than Brentford but he literally played for us 2 weeks ago and has joined a club with zero reputation lately for developing young players or having a patient fan base.
The talk of him developing under Ange is also bollucks when you look at the main criticism of him in a 2 horse race league being not playing youngsters and its sort of insulting to our manager who has already through his work with England but also Swansea and us has proven to be a much better developer of young talent than Ange could dream of.
Its just hit a nerve seeing him get all of this press and praise when he's not even pulled on his new shirt and people not mentioning his old club.
Also whilst I'm ranting, Robert Page is a cock and its probably a close race between him and Ange as to who gets fired soonest but he won't and shouldn't ever get a Premier league job because his achievements have basically come from Gareth Bale.

Rob Page doesn't have any achievements. He's won 1 game against Turkey at a tournament in his 3 years as Wales manager - and also played Dan James & Harry Wilson ahead of Brennan is the last World Cup.Also whilst I'm ranting, Robert Page is a cock and its probably a close race between him and Ange as to who gets fired soonest but he won't and shouldn't ever get a Premier league job because his achievements have basically come from Gareth Bale.
Have you seen their team? They're basically shit. All of Wales' good results came under Coleman in 2016, they've done naff all since.
No „basically“ about it.Have you seen their team? They're basically shit.
No „basically“ about it.
They had one world-class player, when he could be bothered to turn up, and he’s now retired.
Their best XI would probably struggle in the Championship.
Very Anthony BurgessLove the word Pissant.... underrated and underused.
It was a staple insult at school which for some reason then had "clockwork" added to the front of it at some stage... you know you'd proper f**ked up when you got called a clockwork pissant
What's interesting is that if you look at what's in the pipeline.. There's a good chance that pretty soon they'll be looking back on this two as "back when we had decent keepers"The fact they had to play last World Cup with our now 4th choice keeper as number 1 and 2 inch arms Danny ward deputising probably says a lot!
TBF, after the world cup they were billing him as the player they would build the team around for the next few years.Wow, wales are hyping brennan up like he’s the second coming of pele now that he’s signed for spurs!
he’s the answer to all their goal scoring problems apparently?
2 goals in 21 up till now.
good luck brennan, hope your shoulders are gonna be wide enough for the weight of expectation now that you play for a big team…
