Brennan Price Johnson

He gets terrible service - why is he receiving so many balls at head/chest height when that just isn't his game at all? We lost possession a dozen times in the first half alone with terrible passes sent in the vague direction of Johnson in the hopes he'd get something on one of them.

At this level, he must be a full-back's dream. You know he won't win anything or even challenge in the air. You know he'll try and run you so if you drop off him 2/3 yards you can negate that no problem if you're an established PL player. He's not going to dribble around you so just show him onto his left and he'll give it off nice and easy to someone. Job done.

Need more at this level.
That’s pretty much it as it stands.

10 men again tonight. Cooper's infatuation with the lad is causing animosity within the fan base and increases our chances of being relegated.

Brennan needs to be nurtured, not usurping playing time of actual threatening players such as Dennis.
Dennis who gave the ball four times in five minutes in our own half, one of which ended up in a goal against?

Sauce salad?
Dennis is crackers - he'll do something brilliant followed immediately by something ridiculous, like passing the ball to the opposition. There's clearly a player in there, as seen with his shoulder drop in their penalty area last night, but his cameo last night ultimately showed why BJ is getting the nod ahead of him.

Anyhow, tough first half for Brennan last night - thought he grew I to the game well second half. You have to remember he's learning the level at 21, and will be better for the experience of nights like last night.

I thought he was much better in the second half. But just like Awoniyi we aren’t creating a great deal for Johnson and often the ball is being whacked at him through the air.

I think we are overstating this service in to him narrative. We were playing away at Old Trafford on a sodden pitch, if he or the fan base think he is going to get the perfect pass in to feet every time, you are going to be sorely mistaken.

In the second half, he got played in to the channel a good four or five times and either fluffed it or put in a poor ball. If he is going to be a 'moments' player, he needs to start making those moments count.

But let us not go OTT with the criticism, he is 21 years old and in the past 3 seasons has gone from Lincoln, to Championship to Premiership. I still have faith it will click with him eventually.

He just seems to have become so easy to defend against and tackle in the Prem. He got the ball a lot second half, and every time he either ran straight into the defender, kicked the ball straight at the defender and tried to go round him, or ran a little down the wing and cut it back for no-one.
I don’t think we should give up on him, but he is not a starter, even though he will be all season.

The last couple of matches summed up where he is. Very good against Champ defenders but bang average against top end Prem players.

There is an in-between which is the fight we are in. He showed at Everton he has something to offer in this league but he needs to get away from the right touchline and involved a lot more.

Imho, Cooper is right to stick with Johnson.

BJ is a highly prized asset and game experience at the highest level will help him develop.

He seemed to do nothing but this in the World Cup too. I do think he'll regain his mojo, but it needs to be soon.

I agree he is a prized asset and his ceiling is higher than all our players except MGW IMO but his development isn't just about being on the pitch each week.

It can surely actually damage a player's development if their manager plays them every game without fail and never takes them out of the firing line even if they're struggling. For me personally Johnson has done very little in League games to warrant being such an automatic starter and a spell on the bench might do him some good.

I think it's all a moot point at the moment anyway as he'll start vs Chelsea because of all our injuries.

I'd like to see us sign a creative winger in January to take Johnson's position in the XI.

He's a talent, but he's not ready for the PL yet.

In fairness, Cooper has taken him out of the side for a game-or-two earlier, but as you rightly say, now is not the time with the injury situation.

i just wish he could beat the first man with his crosses - so many times he gets the ball, gets down the wing and then hits the defender with people waiting in the box.
An early pass, or a high cross, could cause some difficulty, but can't remember him doing it at all recently...

He's not the one you want putting the cross in, he's the one you want getting on the end of it.
Expecting him to go past at least two defenders 40 yards from goal or twatting balls at head height for him is why not much is happening for him.

Whereas I'd prefer we select a player who can actually contribute and doesn't make it feel like we're playing with 10 men when he's on the field.

He's been beyond woeful (apart from v Blackburn reserves) and if we keep carrying a passenger in the hope of him developing/becoming a Prem standard player we'll be down before you know it.
