Brennan Price Johnson

Proof of lack of depth is bong on the bench

23 million will buy a fair bit of depth
My guess is Grabs’ injury could make the management re-evaluate top six.

Short but sensible post.

I think if we are objective and take a long look at ourselves the injury to Grabban just about finishes our top 6 ambitions and much as it doesn't talk to the emotional side of football, probably the sensible play now is to pull our horns in and make damn sure we get it right in the summer rebuild, rather than spraying money around now at the end of a dodgy window. Whether letting Brennan go for 23M is a sensible part of that strategy is the call....I wouldn't want Danes job.

Exactly.

The last thing we need is a prima donna manager making threats and flouncing around. If this is the case we're back to Billy bloody Davies and his antagonistic "advice" to the board which he trotted out to the media in every interview. In the end it rips the club apart.

I don't for one minute think Cooper is like that and if he is he won't last long and for all his plaudits he might find getting another job difficult if he gets a reputation as a guy that kicks against owners...
Yep. I can't see Cooper doing this... The reality is, Brennan will be off. The only chance of keeping him is if we get promoted. Yesterday's result has no bearing on that, but Grabban's injury really does.

It would be a brave move to turn down £23m. Cooper isn't daft either. Good teams (of our size) develop good players, sell and reinvest wisely.

Exactly Ray.

And I'm afraid the sensible, mature and business like call, when all things are weighed up is to take the money, if indeed 23M really is on the table and the sell on is right. I can't see Brennan getting more valuable than that to a club like ours at our level even if he signs a new contract.
Its horrible, and I'd have loved to see one of our lads with us in the prem, maybe lifting the FA cup or something but its not going to happen I don't think

Sunday was shit, but we're two points off the play offs.

I cant see the club suddenly bailing out & buiding for next season.

£23m? I'd take that sort of sum. Especially if they think Grabs is out for any longer than a few weeks.

That said, I'd want Bowler (or similar) in before 11pm tonight though.

You hae £23m in your pocket and the desperate need of a replacement for a top player.
You go to Blackpool and say, sell us that nice Mr Bowler.
What sort of price is going to be asked, given everyone will be aware you have £23m and are really needy?

I suppose that would depend on where negotiations were with Brentford at that point and if everything was public knowledge.

What if Forest were to approach Blackpool now, buy Bowler and then sell Johnson? In that order. Or are we assuming that Blackpool will hike the price up because they think that Forest are selling Johnson? Maybe Forest are just strengthening in depth.

So many unknowns. None of us know how these things actually work today.

@cheapseats I was, somewhat facetiously, referring to our inability to do the latter. I was chatting to a Southampton scout out in California in the Summer. Albeit we were both pissed but for a historically much smaller club than us they have a system that gets the best return on investment of their young talent. Really, we should have 2/3 young exciting players lined up to replace Brennan should/when he goes. Even if our target costs us £8m.. as long as we sell on we're still progressing. Same applies for Worrall.

Imagine a world where we sell Matty Cash for £15m but the next day buy Spence from Boro for £5m. The remaining £10 can underwrite the wages of the bomb squad. Then imagine a world where we have 10 decent pros on good money, a cluster of academy graduates getting blooded and 4-5 loan players adding value to our team without costing us years in wages.. And no bomb squad costing us millions each year with zero impact on the first team... it's almost unthinkable!

But everyone on here knows Brentcerlona have offered £23m... must be true.

Exactly - I always think its madness when a club announces they have a xxx million war-chest, or sell a player for hefty fee and then expect tp pick up a replacement for a fraction of the fee.

Whatever we get for BJ, keep it confidential then negotiate a good price for his replacement

Definitely agree with this. Its why the majority of fees nowadays are all 'Undisclosed'. We can find out if we look deep enough into things, but, at the same time, it allows all parties involved a chance to do things with some amount of secrecy.

I'm sure that our recruitment side already have a list of players that they will target. Probably have 4 or 5 lists, and even then, alternatives upon that.
I can remember reading a story a fair few years ago on the Everton scouting setup when Moyes was there, and they had a 'war room' where they'd got lists of players in each position that were at different levels for what they wanted.

My local side does the same; Sporting Director Sven Mislintat, who has something of a Wizard‘s touch for finding decent young players, is alleged to keep multiple dossiers of various types of player, split between potential acquisition cost and capability.

When the club then sells a youngster who they’ve developed (a recent example; the sale of French defender Benjamin Pavard to FC Bayern for €35m - he was bought for €1,5m) the club moved quickly by bringing not one, but two replacements, for less than €5m combined.

In the summer, forward Nicolas González left for Fiorentina (in a deal apparently worth some €25m; VfB paid €5,5m for him) and Mislintat has now brought in a 19-year old wonderkid, Tiago Tomaś, from Portugal.

It won't matter. Clubs will understand we've got ~£20m for Brennan even if we say it was undisclosed.

The way to getting good transfer deals on incoming prices is by growing a reputation that says we'll walk away from the deal if it doesn't suit, like Wallace this window. Do enough of those and clubs will realise it doesn't matter how many million we've got, it's not something they will be able to use as leverage.

Exactly... I for one have no idea whether Bees have offered £23m, but lots on here seem to be PITK.
So it must be true.

Looking at the prem table they perilously close to the relegation zone and they have played 2 more games then everyone else. I see Newcastle fortunes will most likely take a upturn and with Burnley having nearly 5 games they could be in a false position, realistically they are desperate at the moment

Thats how I want Forest to work in the future, and its how Brentford are doing it as well. With the likes of Andy Scott, who led Brentfords recruitment when they got Maupay and Watkins in, as well as Murphy, we're definitely looking for that.

Forest players that have been included in the PFA team of the season since the year 2000.

Brice Samba (19/20)
Andy Reid (13/14)
Wes Morgan (10/11)
Lee Camp and Chris Gunter (09/10)
Julian Bennett and Kris Commons (07/08 )
Ian Breckin (06/07)
Andy Reid (03/04)
Michael Dawson and David Johnson (02/03)

If he keeps up his form, there's a very good chance Brennan could be repeating what his father did almost 20 years ago.

Talk of new contract for Johnson on the cards.

After clearing up the deadwood, hopefully BJ can be tied down for a longer term.
