Not signing, but he was on Talk Sport on Monday with Stuart Pearce. Detailing his career in England, he stated he was discovered by Forest in the US. After a trial period Forest offered him a contract at the same time as Celtic.
Brad chose Forest and all the details were ironed out before he went back to the US to talk to his family. After a couple of weeks his application for a work permit was rejected and he went back to playing MLS football. Newcastle also tried later and were unsuccessful. Funny how Liverpool then came in and the permit was granted with no problems at all!

Shame it never went thoguh. A quality keeper and consumate professional!

I think you'll find there was a fair bit of time between us trying for him and Liverpool getting him. I think he went to Turkey first, so probably started accruing USA national caps around that time.

Friedel hadn't met the criteria for a Work Permit hence our application was denied.

When he went to Liverpool, initially he was denied there, but they appealed and won the appeal.

The rest, as they say, is history...

My view at the time was that Forest should've had the benefit of the influence of it's local MP - and HM Cabinet Minister at the time - Ken Clark, in return for the hundreds of freebies he'd blagged in the CG directors' box over the years.

As I remember, it was fairly public knowledge that Liverpool exploited some political influence to eventually obtain a WP for Friedel.

In my view, possibly the most under-rated keeper in the last 20 years in the Prem. And I don't go out of my way to put yanks on a pedestal. Well rounded in all aspects, smart, great positioning, great hands, strong leader, tough....as stated, a consummate professional.
