Billy to be a future guest on Teamtalk show?

Try A Little Tenderness
I've just finished watching this week's show which featured Chris Cohen as a special guest.

Chris was asked a number of predictable questions, one of which being who was the best manager he played under during his Forest career. Although he made special mention of Pearce and Warburton, with kind words for Karanka, he replied that it was probably Davies, due to the fact it coincided with his most successful period playing in the Championship (the game against Yeovil which secured promotion from League One was his favourite moment by the way). He added that Davies was his choice "despite all of that off-field stuff". Although Chris didn't elaborate, Charlie McParland immediately tried to by jumping in to claim "it was all blown out of proportion, and nothing like the press claimed". Hardly surprising given that he was close to Davies.

The show's host (his name escapes me) responded to this by saying something about trying to get Davies to appear on the show. That is something I'd like to see - preferably alongside occasional guest, Paul Taylor or Chippers.

Well, it’s not like Billy has got much else to do, seeing as no football club seems to want to touch him with a barge pole.

Even the barge poles' union has passed a motion preventing any of its members associating themselves with him

Yeah I saw that too. Seemed more like just messing around than being serious though.

As long as it means McParland isn't on

It might be dependant on how far Notts TV expenses go. I think it's limited to paying for on-street car parking at the moment, so whether they'll stretch it to meeting the cost of a return flight from Glasgow to EMA is another question?

Also depends on whether they film the show on the 3 days a week he can be f***ing bothered to leave Glasgow.

Personally I'd look forward to him going through a PowerPoint presentation in comic sans about stress fractures followed by a firm "nae comment" to any follow up questions from his fellow guests (who are, no doubt, members of the Midlands Media Mafia)

Phew! I'm just happy to have made it onto the first page of what is surely going to be an epic thread.

Chris knows the score.

The fans & media create buy into a bizare illusion of Davies, every player interview I've read or heard, and every connection of mine who's been involved with the game has nothing but praise for Davies & his methods (as a first team coach, youth wranglings aside).

A genuine shame that what happens at our club has been dictated more by suits & gossip merchants, than the grounded lads who actually make things happen.

Davies was a fool for not recognizing the muscle which the media & Hannah dexters of this world have, but detatch yourselves from the virtual world & speak to people in the game, and he's held in very high regard by all those who don't wear a suit.

It was what it was. Still say to this day if he gets an owner who fuels his positive qualities & can rise above his negative ones he'll have a manager who can take their club to the next level.

It was Hannah Dexter who took down Billy Davies? What a legend.

It was CC who credited Davies "despite" his off-field antics Alf, clearly implying that issues were created by Billy's behaviour that didn't go unnoticed by the players. It's hardly surprising that McParland tried to play them down.

Best manager he had Otis. His own words, many others words too.

Maybe for once fans & owners should unify, & try rising above petty issues with a view to the greater good in mind, rather than highlighting them & creating our own failure out of fear & weakness.

Some of you want everything perfect. Life isn't like that. Accept progress first, move on to better, then when we're better placed look at the other issues.

the alternate approach has landed us with 6 years of wank. So I know I'm not wrong.

The problem with Billy Davies was never his ability as a manager. It was his quite insane behaviour towards the media which inevitably overtook everything else. Bringing his mate into the club who insisted that FPP was not something to worry about, didn't help either.

If the muscle of the media and fans really is the reason for the demise of Billy Davies, then it can also finish every other football manager. Which would mean handling the the media and the fans would be part of the job of being a football manager.

The best football managers are all good at that side of their job. Our best one was a master at it. Some of the worse ones are not. Billy Davies is probably the worst one I have ever seen at it. And if, as you say, that is really important, then he cannot be a good football manager.

Also Alf, there is some irony in the guy who started the snowflake thread that LJR lives in, still posting after seven years that the media, the board, the fans were all so unfair on poor Bill and they should have tried to like him more?

I actually agree franco, I just think it's better to have a great manager who's weak with the media like Davies, than a shit manager who's great with the media like McClaren.

My point always has been we'll rarely land a manager who's great with both, and that the playing aspects of the game should always be prioritized. Especially when we're only a few players away from promotion.

And that thread was started for shits & giggles. It's as disposable as the media comments about Davies, and if you are putting any serious stock in either you wnat to have a word with yourself.

Billy wasn't weak with the media in the traditional sense. He clearly had some sort of mental issue and his behaviour became more and more erratic and embarrassing. I honestly felt, and feel, like the guy needs some sort of help.

His comments since leaving indicate a worrying delusion of grandeur too, so it's not as though the Forest period was just because of the pressure of the job, sadly.

What a shame they have to appease some twat with an A* in English whose highest qualification in football is an opinion.

It doesn't have to just be appease. It may feel like that when the media turns on a manager (like the national press do England managers). But a manager who is good at that side of being a football manager abd leader in public view would see the media's influence as a positive. Venables was good with the media, he had their backing and the nation behind him despite stuff going on that other manager would have been destroyed for. Redknapp has always played the media well. Clough was a genius.

They are all linked - media, board opinion, fans opinion. Obviously having the board and the fans' support is big advantage.

Most managers struggle more for support when they aren't winning games, Davies was in the minority who seemed to struggle even when he was. It is not the fault of half the fans, the board, the media that they maybe didn't like him. Difference sets of board, media and fans didn't seem to like him in his previous jobs. That's on the man himself.

Maybe underneath he's the greatest bloke in the world. Who knows? But it was a necessarily part of being a football manager he seemed abject at. Maybe he was shooting for siege mentality like Warnock, or Ferguson. But they are experts at that.

Hoddle is a good manager to compare to Venables.

Ignoring the big football party in England and Psycho going nuts aspect, Venables' side were fantastic against the Dutch at Euro 96. But that was the only match they were even good in. they were poor against the Swiss, lucky against Scotland, beaten 2-0 by Spain but for homer linesman decisions that host nations tend to get, and failed to beat an ageing German side that were bundled out of the World Cups either side of that Championship by Bulgaria (who themselves had been thrashed 3-0 by Nigeria) and Croatia (3-0). But for one game, Venables tenure wasn't very good.

Hoddle had his ups and downs, but with England he won Le Tournoi in 97 - a competition involving France, Italy and Brazil back when internationals were still taken seriously. They beat the Italians to World Cup qualification (Maldini, Costacurta, Nesta, del Pierro, D Baggio, R Baggio, Zola...). France 98 was a mixed bag. But the performance with Argentina playing with ten men for 75 minutes was pretty good. Performances against Tunisia and Columbia were decent.

England played some good football , and put in some disappointing performances, under both managers.

Venables had the media eating out of hands and is remembered as one of our best that left too soon. He had skeletons in his closet that the media could have buried him for but didn't.

Hoddle was perceived as superior and he wasn't popular. He didn't have the skills Venables had of dealing with the media. He said Cole needed too many chances to score, and said Owen wasn't a natural finisher and those lines were remembered to use against him. He played M People on the team coach on the way to the ground, and they used that against him. They laid into him for his beliefs, and if it wasnt that it would have been sonething else. He was slaughtered for introducing the team to Eileen Drewery. Then he said something really very stupid (that nevertheless was still probably a set up), the slip up they were waiting for, and he was gone.

Hoddle was bad with the media. But still seemed several levels above Davies.

And Alf’s “shit manager” Steve McClaren has had a far more successful managerial career than his hero too. If McClaren is shit, what does that make Billy?

I'm sure many a Chairman has had a look ar wee Billy D. Probably as far as speaking to contacts in the game, looking in at his personal life etc. and pulled back based on what they've learned. His relationship with Whyte and McKay being the biggest red flag.

Word of mouth goes a long way in this game, so if like you say, people are raving about him, the people you're speaking to can't have much influence in the world of football, because he still doesn't have a job...
