Ben Osborn [BUPA]

Out of contract in the summer. All round good egg. Can play in a number of positions, all of which Forest are somewhat short in as per below (with who he could replace in brackets):

- #10 in a 4-2-3-1 (Carvalho)
- #8 in either a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-2-1 (Colback)
- Left of the 2 in a 3-4-2-1 (Zinkernagel)
- Left back/left wing back (Bong)

Not a blow your socks off signing, but extremely practical in that it fills a lot of holes very cheaply, it's a low chance of failure as he'd settle in very quickly, and the player still has a good 5-6 years in him still if not more.

Sheff Utd would probably take a small fee for him if we wanted him in January, or we could wait until summer.

Edit: BUPA as there's absolutely no rumours/sources on this one at all.

If there was any possibility of it you'd take him ,without question because of his flexibility, attitude and he fits the ethos and personality. He's currently doing a lot of coaching with Jack Andrews locally and I'm sure even from a learning experience he'd get a lot from Cooper.

Anyone ever had one of those "You don't know what you've got til it's gone" type situations? Maybe they weren't the best looking but the conversations were always engaging and they were probably wild in bed.

It's the same with owd Benny and Forest. Underappreciated but always important. Great character, a great servant to the club and a vastly useful player to have around at this level. I think he'd be a top signing for any side in the division.

Just so I can clarify mate, are you suggesting forest should sign him, or are you saying he's an absolute demon between the sheets?

I'd take him back in a heartbeat. I thought he could become a good wing back (full back not so much) and can fill in various midfield positions to a decent standard. All round good egg too, I reckon Cooper would really like him. If we could get him back for a reasonable fee/wages I'm all for it.

Honestly? Probably both. You just know he'd give it his all. 7/10 performance as a minimum every week, and definitely not one to kick up a fuss if he doesn't get his own way.

Good point. We should all strive for a 7/10 performance. Just every week would be a fine thing.

Id love to see Benny back here, he was under rated by many forest fans, always put in a good shift, reliably fit for virtually every game, skillful on the ball and versatile, would take him back in a flash

Can't get into Sheffield United's team. Came on last night and still looks shite. He was a versatile player, being equally ineffective in a number of positions. The fact that Sheffield seem happy to give him away for nothing at the end of the season should say it all.

Benny is a bit like Yates, in the sense that at Forest he was a virtual ever present and picked by every manager he played for - yet some fans couldn’t see what he brought to the team

I'd have him back. He'd be good for the squad, good cover, in fact he'd actually start a fair bit on the left unless we get someone else like Djed. I'm not sure he'd want to come back after the way some people treated him though

He'd certainly be on a sizeable salary compared to what he was on when he left. Depends on his demands, of course, but I wouldn't want to push the financial boat out for 'cover'.

He’ll be on Zilch in the Summer…

But, as is the way with modern football, an agent in his ear telling him that he can hold out for a few extra quid that his new team would be saving on not having to pay a transfer fee.

Eh? Out of the 27 players they've used this season, Osborn's raked up more game time than 20 of them

He's got more game time for them than Max Lowe for us, and is 17min shy of Colback's minutes.

He's also their joint 3 top scorer too.

And this is what their fans say about renewing his contract...........

His versatility and level of consistency in both performance and effort has seen him become a popular player with the fanbase and the majority are in agreement that he deserves a new deal.

We asked fans on social media to have their say on what they think should happen - and the message back was clear.

On Facebook at Yorkshire Live's Sheffield United page SUFCLive, this is what they said...

Jayne Spittle: "Every team needs an Osborn."

Helen Speed: "Most definitely, YES. He has so much energy, been the best player on the pitch a few times. One of my seven-year-old's favourite players (alongside Billy, of course).

Andrew Fisher: "Yes, definitely. Great player."

David Bunn: "100% he puts everything he's got into the game."

Brian Skellend: "Definitely one of our better players...100% every game."

Ryan Godbehere: "Yes!!! Gives his all whenever he puts on a Blades shirt."

Simon Gilbert: "New contact? I’d give him my first born!"

John Wragg: "Surely that is not up for debate, a great asset in any team."

We'd be very lucky to re-land Osborn. He would give Cooper some great options, and provide an excellent "out" option for Brennan, plus a more defensive/graft orientated sub for Zink.

Only if he his a bench player, no way should he be a starter. He wasnt a very good player for us just someone who filled in. When we needed magic from him it never came. As wing back he would be too slow, as a centre midfielder he isnt a progressive enough but there is space for him to be a combative squad player for us.

Again, he's been generally good at Sheff U as a wing back? :dunno:

In a higher division too.

You need to get back to the premier league sky wankfest youth. Your expectations for division 2 are a little too high.

Or maybe just unappreciative of what you’re seeing

Having watched Forest for 50 years it's nice to be called "youth". I am very appreciative of what I'm seeing now which is why I don't hark back to those glorious Osborn days.

I always thought he was very good player and was sad to see him leave. I'd have him back in a heartbeat.
