What a ridiculous decision for a man who's had a huge budget to spend, team's not scoring enough goals and are seen as under-performing because they are 7th... ... ...

Seems harsh, after last season especially though they fell away a bit and didn't get top 4 - Arsenal's run-in was very good though.

How harsh depends on who bought the players I think, but sometimes nowadays having £80m to spend isn't as great as you might think (don't mind if Fawaz wants to try it any time though as long as it's not a 'loan'!). I think in most cases things work best if the manager has the say on purchases - yeah I know some Italian teams and other foreign teams did great with the manager just being a 'coach' but for example at Milan in the 90's they had about 6 foreign players and the 'coach' could choose 3 due to the limits on foreigners at that time.

If he bought all the players, he might not have got great value for money (but difficult as players are so expensive and there aren't many all-time greats around to pick up I don't think). Before replying I had a look for some footage of Lamela:
To me, from that (which should be his best highlights) he seems more of a 'normal' player than Bale of course(but if he wasn't maybe he'd have been the one going to Real Madrid) who can contribute usefully but doesn't have outstanding ability or pace. I suppose Roma are not a small club though so it was going to take a big offer to get him. I know that Tottenham were also linked with Pastore (who maybe would have been a bit more of a stand-out player if it had worked out; possibly some good form can still come from Lamela if he gets a run in the side though) and Ozil too IIRC. I'm not sure if Lamela is really much better than Andy Reid though to give a Forest comparison.

Similarly, Eriksen has some nice vision and is technically good but it could be asked how much better he is compared to Raddy Majewski.

Saldado is a good finisher but not if he doesn't get enough good chances.

I think AVB did better last season than a lot of managers would have. After the Liverpool defeat, this season is looking much more 'average' for Tottenham though. But he had pretty much built last season's team around Bale, and the creativity of Modric and VDV from Redknapp's team had already gone.

It does seem a bit reactionary though (to one big loss) and it now seems harder to keep a real Premier League job the season after a good one, than it ever did on Championship Manager (who either started the trend, or more likely the creators spotted it and incorporated it!)

A bit suprised but then they have a couple of bad defeats. 5-0 at home to Liverpool is bound to get you in strife. He didn't seem to have the best relationship with the fans either. Levy is getting a bit like Abramovich in his ruthless way.

More pressure than having no money I think. The expectation becomes very high and very quickly. I watched it on MoD2 but couldn't understand why he had dropped Holtby who looked good in the parts of the Europa Lg game I saw on thursday. Suarez looked awesome mind and Lawro was raving on about Henderson being the new Stevie G.

I think having two relatively short and unproductive stays at Prem clubs hasn't done his reputation in England much good. Perhaps he is better off going back to Portugal for a few seasons.

There's been questions asked over the club's signings during the summer, and whether or not they were AVB's choices or those of Franco Baldini, the sporting director.

They've brought in some good players after losing Bale, but I wonder if they're suited to AVB's style of play? Soldado for example has struggled to fit into the Spurs team this season, while Lamela and Capoue haven't done much.

This says it all for me, the length of time Premier League managers have been in their jobs for currently.

Yeah the tightrope of over-achieving vs under-achieving is very unstable at Tottenham. Like with Steve Clarke, maybe last season's achievments even went against him as as soon as it looks like he'll not do as well this year (losing to a rival who were 3 points ahead) he has gone. Probably Tottenham would have looked more harshly on a mid-table finish last season than WBA would have done on a mid to lower finish so he could have been at risk last year if he'd not done so well. WBA's decision is marginally the more surprising to me but they are the ones in danger of getting relegated I suppose (and maybe they have a target lined up?).

I had a bet on Tottenham and on a draw to cover it off when I realised Gerrard wasn't playing. I emptied out my bank account (well not quite but I had to spend 80 quid) to bet-in-play on Liverpool though when they scored and made a tener on the game overall .
I can't make my mind up on Liverpool, but Rogers has certainly got them playing well often and they are in contention near the top again now. I'm not sure Henderson is quite as good as a new Stevie Stone, but he's playing well to be fair to him and he's in a role which is getting the best out of him it seems. Suarez's opening goal probably decided the game, given Tottenham's current team I think (as opposed to the last few years). Certainly at 2-0 I couldn't see them coming back (although it didn't stop me worrying about it and keeping the bet-in-play window open - I nearly wasted my tener having another counter-bet on the draw before Liverpool got their 3rd!).

IMO they're an average prem team with one of the world's best players. Rodgers' only real job is to stop suarez leaving. As long as he can do that his job is safe.

He probably deserved more time. Too many new players. Laudrup would be a very good appointment for them

Not a bad call - I don't think they are as good as some of the other teams at the top generally but if they keep getting the results they could have a good finish of course.
The scouse comedian made a joke about benefitting from Suarez having a long summer break on Football Focus
I thought Carragher's joke about the Swansea fans not celebrating a goal out of respect for Danny Graham was ok as well to be fair - he occasionally comes up with a good one.

I think he might too, although he'd not have a ready made team as such - not a Tottenham-style expansive one anyway. He seemed to think Bale was a great player, so would maybe have liked the job better with him in the squad (not that he'd necessarily have more luck asking Bale to stay as AVB and Bale were like best mates at times last year - only if Bale was liking the idea of playing for a great player I suppose, but he definately wanted to go to Real Madrid).

Only a matter of time before some gorm on Twitter suggests we try and hire AVB. If not already, I haven't looked...

I imagine he will go for a job in Spain now as his career in England is pretty much dead. It's a shame really, as I thought he had great potential when Chelsea hired him on the back of that Europa League win.
