Are we where we should be?

Following promotion to the Championship we were in danger of going straight back down until BD came in in place of CC and steadied the ship, allowing us to finish in 17th place with 7 points to spare.

Most of us on this forum hoped for a season of consolidation following that narrow escape, neither getting involved in a battle for promotion nor a relegation dogfight. As is usually the way for Forest, that didn't happen, and at the end of last season we found ourselves finishing in third place and hoping for promotion via the play-offs.

Many people, myself included, would say that we had overachieved last season and finishing in the play-offs was more than we could have reasonably expected.

Because of how well we did last season I think there was an expectation that we would go one step further this campaign and perhaps attain automatic promotion, maybe even as champions. Whilst I didn't personally subscribe to that view, I do believe that our final position this season is in line with reasonable expectations of where we should be at this time.

I think it would be fantastic should we be promoted this season, but sadly still think we are missing a bit of depth and quality in the side and think that it might be just a bit too much to ask for. Having said that, the play-offs are a bit of a lottery and we do seem to have hit a spot of form at the right time and hopefully that will carry us through.

Last season we overachieved, this season I think we are where we ought to be, and if we fail to achieve promotion this time round, would like to think that next season we can reasonable expect promotion and do so automatically.

As always, that will depend on keeping hold of our better performing players and attracting new players to the club that are capable of taking us up to the next level.

Totally agree, being a forest fan is never boring is it? :console:

When is the last time we had a boring season? I'm thinking back to the season before Hart's playoff season

Then it went:
Sheffield United-gate
Avoiding relegation in style
Relegation
Missing out on playoffs last day
Yeovil-gate
Promotion
Missing out on relegation
Blackpool-gate
Swansea-gate

Has he singed yet?

What's with all the gates? :dunno:

To be fair, I remember us flirting with relegation in Hart's first season as well! We must be looking back to the Platt days for the last time we had a season of real mid-table obscurity!

Er? We weren't far off relegation in Platt's last season with us, about 20 points off the play-offs.

Go back even further:

87/88 - FA Cup semi-final
88/89 - FA Cup semi, League Cup final, Simod Cup final
89/90 - League Cup final
90/91 - FA Cup final
91/92 - League Cup final, ZDS Cup final
92/93 - relegation
93/94 - promotion
94/95 - chasing European qualification
95/96 - FA Cup and UEFA Cup quarter-finals
96/97 - relegation
97/98 - promotion
98/99 - relegation

That's 12 seasons in a row we had something to play for come Easter (ish). Never a dull moment!
