Could be that Richards will miss the first half of the season.

We can’t “wait” half a season with the importance of wing backs… he could be a replacement for Richards.

If Richards injury is a half season, the club will have insurance for the transfer fee and wages - this would allow another premium LWB.

I just can’t see him playing higher up, especially if we sign Cornet (I’m still not even sure where Cornet is playing at this point!) lots of positive headaches for Coops hopefully.

Same here Ash, that versatility is key for me. Not only is he versatile though he's bloody good in all those positions

I agree. With Moreno he can only really play left back for us, as we don't play with wingers. That means when Richards is fit, we'll have three left backs on the books.

Cornet's versatility would mean that even when Richards is fit and starts for us, we could use Cornet in another role. It just makes far more sense than blowing £20m on Moreno.

I'd be surprised if we do go back in with another bid, considering the figures mentioned. Good player but paying that kind of money just to cover Richards injury feels like complete overkill.

Supposedly still in for Moreno.

I'd much prefer Cornet personally; cheaper, younger and has Premier League experience.
I'm intrigued to see if we plan to play this guy further forward at times. I just can't see how. He does seem skilfull and has a decent cross & shot on him. If not then it's definitely over-kill.

All things considered, we should be throwing everything at getting Cornet. Versatility, goals, dead ball specialist. He's literally perfect. If it's true that he isn't keen/wants European football then this chap might be the alternative/back up option.

The bit of Fabz' tweet about Moreno is that we supposedly agreed personal terms "weeks ago" so presumably before Richards got injured?

I thought this was a last minute target to get Toffolo over the line. But I'm not sure now.

If we’ve agreed terms with the player I would think his agent will be putting pressure on the club to accept a lower bid.
And are we playing one off against the other - Moreno v Cornet?
Seems to be our modus operandi?

From what I've read, Moreno can play left back or further forward as a winger (which isn't much use to us, as we don't play with wingers). This means that his only real use to us is as a left back, which is a problem as we have already shelled out money on two of those this summer.

Cornet makes more sense; as you say he can play in other roles and brings more to the table.

If we can't get Cornet and are just settling for left back cover until Richards is back, then a loan signing would make far more sense than spending £15-25m on Moreno.

It may seem overkill but you can't turn your nose up at a guy of this quality if we sign him.

Reminds me of the Samba / Spence situation where it was deemed overkill when we signed them but they were worth it.

We are also short of wide players in my opinion.

I've mentioned a few times that I think we will see Coops go with a 4 at the back more regularly especially in game. That's where the ability to have wingers comes in and it seems to be something that we are specifically looking at with our wing backs

It will also allow us to change things up with changing personel.

Like I have just said we still lack wide attacking players, even if he is brought in as a LWB, he can play LW. I think we are short in those areas & we will need a plan B.

Cooper often switched to 4-2-3-1 when we were behind, didn't see it much in the tail end of the season because we were rarely behind!

Usually agree with you but not on this one. He's never payed in England before so there would be a risk there, and we already have two left backs albeit one injured for now. It's not like the Samba or Spence risk where we were risking far less, this would be a big-ish fee.

I would also question those suggesting he's real quality. His clubs so far have been Rayo Vallecano, Mallorca and Betis. Not sure where this notion of his standing has come from.

He is a very good player mate, and he and Betis have had a great last few years

He was also a youth player at Barca so he obviously has genuine pedigree

First choice left back for the team that has finished 5th and 6th in the last few years in La Liga, whilst scoring goals and assists last season. I'm sorry that Robertson and Cancelo were unavailable...

How much has he actually played as a winger? Playing naturally and well in a position versus being able to play there are very different things!

If his form over the last few years has been at LB then we shouldn’t be signing him to be a winger.

I think Cooper had us playing the system we did because of what was available. The best managers adapt to their players they have available whereas shit ones like Hughton have no plan B. Perhaps the hope this season is we play with wingers...

Some serious players in that Betis side. Looking forward to watching this tomorrow.

Wasn't Roger Riera one of those too?

If I were to compare Betis to a team in England, our friends at West Ham would be a good comparison. They're a long way off the top few but do well, as they should given what they often spend.

And most of their first XI would get in ours.
