Is the Youth cup game on telly/internet anywhere?

Not sure. Maybe Chelsea TV?

Going to be such a good game. Winners play United at Old Trafford in the final.

Chelsea have all their England players.

But I really rate our group under the radar. Mix of the Cash/Yates/Worrall/Burke/Walker group & the Richardson/Harbottle/Johnson/Appiah/Mighten/Swan group.

Bott is a sensational young goalkeeper.

We have that uncompromising edge in our CBs whoever plays there whether it be Hammond, Hanks, Abbott (been sensational for an U16 how composed he is already at this level), Johnson or Thompson but like Worrall they brave on the ball and want to make a play. This is without Clarridge who is still struggling unfortunately.

Collins and McDonnell in midfield. Again McDonnell loves the battle & is a leader by example but has composure on the ball too. Collins if you asked me what his strengths were it was on the ball he is neat but he has worked so hard on his off the ball work. Some of his tackles/blocks in the Cambridge away game was by all accounts crucial. Thompson & Perry play here as well when they step-in don't let anyone down. Don't forget we signed that other Northern Irish lad Bobby-Jack McAleese who is supposedly a ball-player but I think he will be one for next season.

Wing-backs. Powell and McAdam are tough boys. They will run through brick walls. Both left-footed. And have always had goal threat coming through the age groups. Both rewarded on the bench for the 23s recently. Joey Gardner is perhaps different. Back from injury and he was more a winger but played in the early rounds as RWB. More silky and a dribbler.

Then the front 3 will be Nadin, Taylor and Osong but Perkins is pushing so hard to get in here. Nadin and Perkins look like little pieces of straw (much like Collins :)) but they are all technically superb. Nadin has a flair & unpredictability to him. Perkins despite his size is such a smart mover with and without the ball. Plus both have great shots on them. One right-footed and one left-footed.

Then the more I see Dale Taylor the more I think Wayne Rooney. Can't give him much more praise. Osong like Harewood but possibly with better feet. They both bring the physicality to balance Nadin/Perkins.

What are your thoughts regarding the current crop of 18s progressing into the first team? I know people are on about Dale Taylor who already has full caps for NI as a kid but him and Osong look pretty physically dominant which often helps that age group look better than they are.

But conversely, Nadin and Perkins seem to be the opposite and thriving but then Ethan Dekel was small and highly rated but then somehow still didn't get there.

It's about time the academy brought through a decent striker for the first team as it's been ages.

Right now I think things are still pretty open for all of them really. I reckon we have serious layers of talent here. Some might need longer. Some might need loans. Some might be pushed forward from U23s.

Perhaps Dale Taylor is the one seen right now as nailed on if he keeps doing what he is doing. I watched Aaron Donnelly & Dale Taylor for Nor Ire U21s the other night against star-studded French team where all their players get regular minutes in the top leagues. I tell you what, Dale Taylor didn't look out of place despite his age. Started an attack from his own half and ended up testing their GK from the edge of the box or backing himself in tight areas to beat their players. He has massive self belief. Donnelly to for that matter for such a young defender & almost the back-bone of that team already. But Dale looked like he belonged. He loves dropping deep & has a creative spark/x-factor that Rooney had despite looking at them & thinking they should be bullying their opposition.

Osong has been sensational this season. I just think you want to see how he steps up with each age group because he is a direct running physical machine but I think what will allow him to keep stepping up is those surprisingly good feet of his to create a yard of space to shoot.

The difference with Dekel being he was more a midfielder. I see Nadin and Perkins more as attackers. I also get the feeling athletically they are willing to move more hence being further up the pitch and carrying goal threat in open-play. Another factor is how coachable they are. You get the feeling Brazil/Joyce like Nadin a lot. I'm massive Perkins fan bit he is a very quiet young lad whereas Nadin has a cockiness to him. Often small things like that could make the difference. I'm not saying it will but it might.

Striker or forward?

Haven't we produced Bamford, Brereton, Johnson as goal-scorers. Probably others too like Walker etc

But you right though. Swan was the CF with roaming attackers Mighten cutting in from the left on his right, Johnson through the middle and Appiah in from the right on his left which seemed the vogue and preferred option by many and still is with full-backs over-lapping. Our current system plays the 3 forwards more central like our first-team.

So I meant specifically strikers who have made it into the first team regularly in that position.

Johnson is definitely a first team player, but isn't really a striker, he's more of a winger or plays behind the main striker.
Bamford is a striker, but didn't really play at all for us before we sold him to Chelsea, so never made our team.
Walker wasn't really a regular first team striker here, I think when he came through under Freedman(?) he was used a bit sparingly, and then went out on loan a bit, but even when he came back in the lockdown season he tended to be on the bench (coming off for that goal vs Leeds I think). I notice incidentally Cov have offloaded him as well.
Brereton is probably the closest, as he did play a lot in the team under Warburton and Karanka that season, though again we did use him more as a wide player sometimes than up front, as did Blackburn until recently.

There have no doubt been other strikers and plenty of attacking players making first team appearances, but I think the last one really who came through our academy and actually established himself as a first team striker was probably Harewood (and he was shit for about 3 seasons).

I think Paul McGregor was in an interview recently where he said it was similar under Clough with Forest buying strikers rather than bringing them through, and he was the exception at the time who made some first team games (though I wouldn't have said he was a regular either). If you think back to Clough's last few years when we had Sheringham then Rosario (!) and then Clark brought in Collymore, Roy, Silenzi, Campbell, then Bassett brought in van Hooijdonk, Shipperley, Freedman, Darcheville... the list goes on but they're basically your first team strikers even though some of them were shit.

Taylor looks like more than a flat track bully then it seems, if he has intelligent link up play as well as strength it probably isn't too long before he's joining the 1st team strikers. I suppose Larsson seems like he's scoring a fair amount as well, which was never a perception I got with Swan, though when you think of Harewood at Swan's age...

Young Harbottle always looked a tidy prospect but he was derailed by injury.

Really good to hear he’s getting back to something approaching his best.

Yes, never really looked under pressure, massive potential there and I am starting to believe any losses from either non returning loans or balancing the book sales will not hurt massively!

Larsson continues to impress, proper hard working CF and very intelligent with his movement. Can see why Cooper has a keen interest in him

Looks like a decent crowd will hopefully be supporting the boys in Forest U18s first SF of the FA Youth Cup since 2013. Think only previous one was 1988 & thinking of the excellent players we've produced so what an opportunity for them to get to the final at Old Trafford.

Also well done to 15 year-old Zach Abbott on his first England call-up. Off to the prestigious Montagu tournament in just over a week or so.

Expected team tomorrow night. Going to be some tough calls particularly for Johnson, Gardner & Perkins.

Nice article in the Athletic : https://theathletic.com/3224061/202...sts-flourishing-academy-is-backing-up-cooper/

Couple of pieces from Joyce.

“He forced his way into our side through his performances in training. He showed a tremendous attitude, he has a tremendous desire to learn and push himself,” Under-18s head coach Warren Joyce tells The Athletic. “He has just been called up by England. It is massive for Zach, but he has earned it.

“We like to play on the front foot and players like him are having to defend big areas of the pitch. They often find themselves in one-v-one situations. They have to find a way or they struggle. The exposure to it can fast-track their process, to get them to a point where they can play in the first team.

“Look at Joe Worrall against Liverpool, when he found himself in one-v-one situations — and dealt with it comfortably. The manager (Cooper) likes to play as a front-foot team and if players cannot deal with that, they will not progress.”

“They are a close bunch. A lot of them have been here since they were eight or nine. They have grown up with the club, with the traditions,” Joyce says. “They were buzzing, like little kids, when they saw some of the cup games the first team played in (Forest also knocked out record 14-time winners Arsenal and holders Leicester City to make the last eight). It is fantastic to have that core group who have come all the way through and who care so passionately.

“The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United (who await Monday’s winners in the final) have such big budgets — to be in the hat with teams like that is a great achievement. But it is about having respect — and (having) no respect. We know what we are about and we do not fear anyone. We are looking forward to having a right go against Chelsea and then, hopefully, again in the final.”

Otherwise, Forest’s youth side is normally almost entirely made up of players from the local area.

“That is massive,” says Joyce. “The clubs we play against will sign players from all over the place. We do have the lads from Northern Ireland but the rest of them are all from around here. We have games sometimes on a Friday morning, where we pick teams by postcode. We play locals versus out-of-towners — and we have to do it by how many miles they live outside of Nottingham. They are very competitive, these games. They have a bit of rivalry. But that is good. They push themselves. They all want to do everything they can to see if they can get up to that (first team) level.

“It is the most important thing — having good characters as well as good players. You challenge players to be the best that they can be, every single day. If they do that, they will play at the level they want and they will be happy and trusted by managers. They must do things to the absolute max every single day and never look for excuses.”

How great is it to have a first team head coach that understands player development?
