A Smoggie friends comment on the game

Dear mods I don't want to hijack Calvin's superb threads on fan's comments so please move this one to it when Calvin posts his.

However I did get this from my staunch Smoggie mate who was at the game. (He does have a soft spot for Forest though)

"We dominated the first half but had none of the second. It's only finishing that was the problem for Forest. I think you will be a lot higher up next season. AK got a good reception which I think was appropriate. COYR and UTB!"

Why can't it go in the match day thread?

Following on from Raztechs's link to the Boro fans' interviews in the Matchday thread, I watched around 5 vids & we were everything from "shit" to "the better team" & between.

Personally I think yesterday was a reality check of where we were, and in reality Boro got in front commfortably, sat back & controlled the game. Yes we threatened at times, but they allowed us to as they were sitting back.

Think it just highlighted the class between both sides, and how we are desperate for a real quality front player to make AK's system work.

There's also the fact their starting line-up cost the best part of £40m and then another £15-16 million off the bench.

I don't want to use that as an excuse because they drew with Burton last weekend who are worth a couple of kit-kats (no disrespect intended) but when a someone beats a team worth that much it's often one of the first things pointed out "we beat your £60m team with our £5m team!" but often neglected in the post mortem of a defeat against those kinds of sides.

Transfer fees are meaningless in the modern game.

Agents are in the ears of owners, TV money skews everything and clubs like Boro have to pay well above the odds in terms of fees and wages for average players. Much like we were when Fawaz was here, they were taken for a ride.

They paid £9m for a striker who scored 5 goals and was loaned out after half a season. Does that fee sound reasonable?

It's not reasonable but it shows the level they're at compared to us that they can throw that kind of money on a punt for a lad who has scored 5 League One goals in his career.

Any team coming down will be at this level with the new Sky deal. And to think people are talking promotion next season...

Well exactly it shows what you have to do to even compete anymore.

When do we talk about promotion if we can never compete financially with the teams coming down?

Every season, talk of promotion has been unrealistic for a whole host of reasons. Finance shouldn't put an end to it, just don't invest too much hope in it.

But when does it become realistic? What has to happen first?

I think we can talk about promotion when we have a settled team who are within touching distance of top 6.

All this talk of 'next season' is a bit too premature given that in one window under Karanka, we seem to be worse off. He signs on average 11-12 players a season. Not all of those work out.

I won't be considering promotion at the moment. Relegation next season is as likely. Probably mid table is realistic.

I don't think the gulf between the Premier League and the Championship is quite what it was a few years ago. More and more Championship teams are going up and staying up.

It looks like all three of the teams to be promoted last year are staying up, and two of those (Huddersfield and Brighton) have not been in the top division in a long, long time.

Of the three teams that were relegated last year, only one is in the top 6, and they've only just snuck into 6th place in the last week.

The Championship has become a lot more competitive in the last five years or so, in my opinion. There's very little yo-yoing now. It's all to play for next season for Forest, too.

Double relegations are happening almost every season now, too.

The 'level' we were talking about was the money involved in the modern game and the spending power of relegated clubs.

I was making the point that Boro's squad value was inflated due to everyone knowing they had money to waste. Whether Boro's team cost £40m or £5m is not necessarily proportional to how good their players actually are.

For a club to get promoted without spending beyond their means requires either good man management or very good recruitment. I don't think Karanka possesses either of these things.
