Is the way to play according to Douglas.. Maybe he's realising that trying to score some goals might be a good idea if we want to win matches. Maybe its because he's got no more central defenders left to play holding midfield. His reasoning for not trying to play this before seems a little weak, however thats all water under the bridge now. I like the fact he's trying something different after realising that we aren't scoring enough goals whilst our defensive set up doesn't stop us conceding them either.. This is the turning point for Douglas.. Onwards and upwards..

I hope he perseveres with this. It plays to the strengths of our players, It makes us a bigger goal threat and its versatile in that the two central midfielders can push up or sit depending on the quality of your opposition.

We,ve never really settled on an ethos of play, I think this is a great foundation on which to build.

Mancienne is the key to its longevity though. Dougie seems very reluctant to drop him, and he doesnt fit into a 442 with his weakness going forward.

I hope he ditches 4:4:2 ASAP - we haven't got 2 decent strikers but we have got 5 decent midfielders. Play to your strengths...

2-3-5, back to the '60s.

f*** that modern shit.

2-3-5, back to the '60s.

The good old days when positional titles made sense...

Two proper Full Backs, a Centre Half, and a couple of Inside Forwards.

442 is so negative.

I thought we looked far more threatening playing 4-5-1/4-3-3 v Boro/Hull than we did playing 4-4-2 v Burnley.

The lack of CM's means 4-4-2 is a must at the moment, though.

I think he said something along the lines that 4-4-2 only works well when the two strikers have a good understanding. He's tried an Oliveira/Walker partnership in training and judging from the last match he thinks that it could work.

I hope he holds his nerve, persists and allows that understanding to develop.

Being pedantic, I should point out that the formation v Burnley was still primarily a 4-3-3 but with two of the three playing centrally.

Walker is clearly gifted but needs to bulk out a bit before he can be an effective Championship striker, even alongside a lump like O'Grady.

Put him up against one of QPR's like Onuoha or someone like Danny Shittu and as soon as he gets close he'll get knocked off the ball like taking candy from a baby no matter how good his control is.

Three man central midfield is where it's at. Thought the strikers lacked proper service on Tuesday, we need Jonny Williams in that CAM role.

I think it works best when one of the 'strikers' isn't really an out-and-out striker but more of an 'inside forward' or 'deep lying striker' or 'number 10' or 'link player' or whatever you want to call it.

Nigel Clough. Tony Woodcock. Bryan Roy.
Dennis Bergkamp. Peter Beardsley. Gianfranco Zola.

I suppose sometimes two goalscoring strikers can work great - PvH and Campbell at Forest, although Campbell did get involved in the play quite a bit didn't he? Yorke and Cole, although again Yorke was almost a support striker and the partnership was still based on link-up play. Shearer and Ferdinand or Shearer and Sutton even might be the best examples (the former one didn't lead to Newcastle improving though to be fair).

We're not going to be able to stick a genius in that role at the moment, but I'm not sure having two players standing up there waiting to be served is better than having one if you know what I mean. A player who can link midfield and attack is always very useful, especially for Forest. Who could try that sort of role do you think? Oliveira? Fryatt? Paterson (if recalled)?

Patrick Bamford is a weedy beanpole and he seems to be handy in the Championship.

Dennis Law was regarded as too small and weedy by Huddersfield Town before he showed that you don't have to be a man mountain to succeed. And that was in the days when rugged tackling was regarded as the norm.

John McGovern was hardly built like the Incredible Hulk either.

4-4-2 mainly works when you have wide players and full backs pushing on, who will put the ball into the box for your strikers to score.

Walker was constantly looking to make runs through the middle and into channels on Tuesday night, he's an in the box sort of striker, not a back to goal big man, which is where he mostly gets the ball and has to get through 2 or 3 defenders just to get near the goal. Give him a 1v1 in and around the box and he'll score goals, like a lot of strikers who have come here and struggled.

I'd be happy today if we create even a few chances for a striker in the box. Mentioned it a week or so back and someone came back with some stats, something like 4% of our chances are from around 6 yards out, with most of our shots being outside the box. Add to that we've had the most shots in the Championship and it's not hard to see why we're not scoring many and also getting beaten. Long shot goals look great but in reality, not many players score them consistently enough for it to be a regular option.
