Only 1 of the top 7 played half a season. You'd like to think we'd have done a bit better if they had.

It is probably telling that both of our runs of good form over the season (Jan) & (April-May) were the only times Mangala played regularly - although his stats in that post are probably skewed because Cooper spent half the season taking him off in the 55th minute :ROFLMAO:

Aurier's are the most impressive because our record with/without is actually crazy.

Serge Starts:
W8 D9 L6

No Serge Start:
W1 D2 L12

I don't think that's just random either, we a visibly better side when he plays.

Bottom 10 no surprise - but Felipe shows how statistics can be misleading.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Neco is it...

I wonder if Aina has come in so Neco and Biancone can have a time out on loan.

Mr Realistic
Biancone is an unknown really but neco is going nowhere before the season starts
Well something has to give as there's surely no way we'd be going into the season with 4 right backs in a squad of 25.

And I know Williams and Aina can both cover the left which helps their cause but I'm assuming Richards will be in the squad with Jakobs if he signs. Toffolo is still technically available too.

Worrall
Boly
Felipe
Niakhate
Mckenna
Aina
Jakobs
Aurier
Williams
Toffolo
Biancone
Richards

I'd say there's at least 2 names there that aren't making it and this is without the potential of us signing another CB.

It's complicated a touch by the fact Williams has to be registered this season.

This is also working on the assumption Cook, Mbe Soh, Panzo etc will all be going.

Worrall
Boly❓
Felipe
Niakhate
Mckenna❓
Aina
Jakobs
Aurier
Williams
Toffolo❌
Biancone❓
Richards❓

If we continue to play 3 CB’s and 2 WB’s your looking at that being half the outfield players.

If you remove Toffolo that’s 11 players, which makes sense when you look at a squad of 25.

That leaves 3 goalkeepers and 11 midfield / forward players. 12 really, as Elanga is classed as U21 this year.

We might see a CB go out, loaned or sold, so another can come in. One of Biancone, Boly or McKenna would likely move on.

I’m questioning Toffolo as he is apparently injured and we have no idea when the ban will kick in. It makes little sense to have him in the squad before January because of that. With Jakobs coming in and Richards hopefully recovering from injury, he’ll find himself surplus to requirements.

Only 1 of the top 7 played half a season. You'd like to think we'd have done a bit better if they had.

Some thoughts:

1) Mangala escapes the "Freuler, Shelvey, Colback" drawdown because he was benched when those three were favoured midfield. That midfield three was so bad that it cost us tonnes of points which will have impacted the other players who were regulars during that timeframe: MGW, Navas, Lodi, etc would all be higher than they otherwise are. Mangala avoids that penalty.

2) Difference between Aurier and Williams is quite tellng, given they are like-for-like replacements.

3) No surprise to see Yates, Danilo, Awoniyi towards the top end - genuine game changers for us. Slightly surprised to see Mangala top it (even considering #1) and Boly in 2nd too. Would have thought they'd be high, but behind Awoniyi and Yates.

4) No surprise MGW, Lodi, Freuler, Johnson, Worrall are towards the middle of the list. They played the majority of games this season so it should be expected they'd be in the middle somewhere as they played through both the good runs of form and the bad runs of form.

5) Probably the most telling thing is the players at the bottom of the list. Ayew, Shelvey, Colback, Dennis, Hennessey all looked out of their depth or a bad fit for the side and it shows that even just having one or two of them in the side, they couldn't be carried by the other players. It shows how important is to be able to get quality in every position - can't f*** about with a free signing from the Middle East to chip in with goals, or put a player into central midfield who couldn't even earn that spot in the Championship.

I've only just seen this. Really appreciate the effort! But (assuming you did this in a speadsheet?) did you run the numbers for 45 - or even 30 - minutes played? Just interested how they might compare.
