OK this interesting again because for me this is referees or you in particular deciding to apply the rules when you see fit and not when they should be. If the time is up then the time is up.
Indeed. If they blew at exactly the right time then the vast majority of the time there would be no issue as the ball would be out of play, in the centre circle etc but 10% or so there would be a bit of annoyance and less than 1% would be a situation like this. But it would happen, be understood and people would get over it.

Doing it incorrectly like our resident ref, CAUSES these things to be blown up like this in to controversy.

You very rarely see a player through on goal and the ref blow though, there's always been an advantage played to a team on the attack has there not?

One thing I have never understood about football and the ambiguity surrounding added time is, why don't they just stop the clock for every event, until the time is up?

The added time has always been " a minimum of..." because delays and time wasting when in the added time will extend it beyond the initial amount shown on the board.

Come off it Redders that would be far too simple to have a big clock on the screen and the 4th official stopping it. Also that would lead to there being no issues or arguments with timekeeping.

You've not thought this through mate

I assume that’s what the refs do with the watch. Would be interesting in this age to be able to see the watch and for how long it stops. Wouldn’t be difficult and there wouldn’t even need to be any rule change.

Which is a completely shite way of doing it. We've got a much more streamline and less ambiguous way it could be done with the technology to back it up.
I mean how does the fourth official know how many minutes it is anyway? He must have to say “my watch now says 45 mins (or 43 because he needs time to set his board up)” and then the ref must have to respond and say “38” and then the fourth official does a bit of quick maths to work out the number to pop in his board. I bet they can’t count under any amount of pressure anyway so the reality will be a random number between 1 and 4 in the first half and 3-12 in the second.

There's no such thing as the time is up,injury time is the minimum amount of time to be played.(Obviously within reason but they can't see a max time or else a player from the winning team would be on the floor for the full duration)

Edit: Apologies for the duplication,I saw CPs post after I had responded.

There is such a thing as the time being up....it's literally when the game finishes. What a weird take

I agree by the way,I don't like how it's done. Maybe they should reduce the game time to 30-35 minutes but every time something happens then stopwatch is paused until the ball is back in play, easy enough to do.

That’s literally how it works but 45.

They don't stop the clock, they add minutes on at the end which usually isn't consistent of the chain of events which has happened.

I'm on about purely have 30,35-45 or however long you want of actual play time.

I will guarantee you that you'd see less "injuries" and play acting to run down the clock and there would be no controversial decisions

The game time clock should be shown on the big screens, and it should start when the ref blows for kick-off, pause when play stops, and restart when play recommences.
That way you know that if the clock is showing (say) 30 minutes there is still 15 to play to half-time.
That isn't rocket science.

In the process scrap cards for time wasting as that's another rule that can be subjective and it shouldn't be.

If there's a certain amount of time that needs to be played doesn't matter how long someone takes.

Anyone still replaying those last few minutes in their head on loop? Still so hard to process. Possibly the most traumatic moment I've experienced live at the City Ground. I just can't believe Taiwo has done that. Inexplicable.

And the more I reflect on it the more I'm absolutely certain that what I witnessed from Tierney was the closest thing to corruption I will probably ever see at an English football ground. Running out of rational explanations for it. Something really sinister is happening and Howard Webb knows it.
Yes I can still see the ball at CHO's feet and remember saying to my son why has he not cleared that then when it went in I was fuming and punched the plexiglass behind my seat and I don't think I've calmed down yet I don't actually blame taiwo as much he was probably shocked he even received that ball there so solid all game just to do that and is just our luck this season the unforced errors points cost must be mad this year

The more you look at it, Taiwo takes the ball off CHO & "trips over it" coughing up posession. Initially you want CHO to get rid of it, but he is taking it away from trouble before Taiwo intervenes. Largely immaterial now, but both players would have felt Nunos wrath Im guessing.

It'd be too easy though - and also too transparent for the "added time" conspiracies e.g. not adding enough when a SS6 team is winning and under pressure, or adding more when they are chasing a late equaliser or winner.

Got to be honest mate my memory is from inside the ground haven't been able to bring myself to watch it back yet so I'm sure your correct and yes the ref stuff is annoying but behind closed doors I'm sure nuno lost it about not clearing lines

Gizza job...go on, gizzit...

Great series, all time classic, shame it featured scouses.
It could only have been about scousers because 1) the author, Bleasedale, was a scouser and 2) it was written after Liverpool had suffered a massive economic collapse, losing 1/4 of its jobs in 5 year period.
