Alternatively he could go there and do poorly or pick up a bad injury, thus seeing his value plummet once his loan ends.

It's a massive gamble loaning out a valuable asset to another club without any guarantees. If it was a permanent deal or a Chris Wood-esque obligation it wouldn't be so bad. But just an option (which Lyon can choose not to take if they damage our asset) would be horrific business for us.
And I doubt the, if he comes back without an injury, he's gonna want to bust a gut for the people who didn't want him here too.

The merits of the deal will fall on what the actual transfer fee ends up being agreed at, plus we need to follow this up and reinvest that cash in a good keeper now.

People know my views on Mangala, but a sale just for the sake of it would be a poor move in our position, unless as said the money is too good to refuse and we use that to strengthen a major area of weakness.

The fact it's being reported as a formality, and they are paying 10m just for the loan means this is good business, highly unlikely he loses 10m of value in 5 months of playing regularly there. Seems structured that way for some kind of FFP reporting reason.

Overall fee is about 21.5m quid, which for me is at least 5m too low. But my guess is they had us over a barrell as they knew we needed to sell to finance a keeper.

I'd have rather kept him at that price, but if it allows us the financial headroom to bring in a keeper then it's worth it.

The problem is the structure of the deal.

£21m guaranteed isn't terrible (though its not great either), but £8.5m plus a note saying "we owe you £12.5m... maybe... if we feel like it..." written in crayon on a scrunched up bit of paper is terrible.

Ultimately, we can't make any decisions or plans around that £12.5m option as we have no idea if we'll ever receive it.

And that's before we even consider the risk of Mangala's value being reduced by injury or doing badly at Lyon.

We needed guaranteed cash (via a permanent deal or obligation), not a deal based on ifs, buts and maybes.

It does say the buy option is considered a formality, so I guess they have to take a calculated gamble.

He could just as easily get injured for Forest, so I don't see how that's different.

I read that as the overall deal being a formality, rather than the option being triggered.

And it's different because we'd be handing control of our asset to another club. It's incredibly risky business IMO.

The VfB will also be due 10% of that fee as a sell-on!

What’s the point in that then? Only reason I’d resigned myself to seeing him go is because we were getting a fat wedge out of it.

Not only do we only get some of the money now, it’s not even that great of a deal for losing arguably our best central midfielder.
Certainly the most consistent midfield performer this season, that’s for sure.

And as yet, I am not sure that Sangare and Danilo are consistent and disciplined enough to sit in front of the defence, but they’re going to have to, and they’re going to have to make it work.

If the buy clause is a formality it's about book keeping surely? We've cash in the bank for this accounting period with the BJ sale so I'm not against it.

Price wise the talk of 40m was a bit over excited. 25m euros is OK - I was hoping for offers above that in pounds.

Anyhow, liked him as a player and wish him well.

Could be that we asked for the deal to be structured that way so that we have enough to cover anticipated spends tomorrow (FFP) and then the rest gets moved into the next accounting window?

Again, a lot depends on the option and if there's triggers there etc.

But it Mangala isn't part of Nunos plans, getting 8m guaranteed for him for 4 or so months is good business if that allows us to buy a keeper or a winger.

It’s either a sale at €25m, which isn’t €35m, but lets be honest here, seems much more realistic. Or €10m and we get him back next season, which considering many don’t want to sell him at all, also seems ok. Especially if can get in a goalkeeper in the interim.

I don’t think €10m for our best midfielder, when we are in a relegation dog fight, and getting him back when we could be in the championship is worth it personally. Which is why a higher fee was more palatable (regardless if you think it was unrealistic it was what was reported).

As you say if this has been done to get in a keeper then it may well pay off.
