Think we have to sell unfortunately.
It is good profit and it will also show the PL that we are serious about the sustainability rules. Selling a player for £20m profit will certainly help our case.

We only really need to sell if we want to bring players in. This season's accounts aren't the issue, last season's are. Selling Mangala does nothing to reduce the likelihood of us getting a points deduction.

The real question is, which is more valuable to us now; Mangala or having money to spend on deadline day?

I'd rather stick with what we've got. I don't trust the club to spend the money wisely, and think decent players will be reluctant to join us anyway.

£30m? thank you very much Lyon.

If we can get Reyna/Sarr and a keeper with that it’s surely a no-brainier?

I’d feel we’d had their pants down at £20m to be honest.
£30m will only happen if he wins the Champions League with them and males 500 appearances.

It'll be like our deals for MGW and others, far lower in reality, probably £18m-£20m plus add ons.

Getting Reyna/Sarr and a decent keeper sounds like a very big if to me though.

In normal circumstances, £30m would be a great offer. But the looming points deduction means that getting any decent player to agree to commit their future to us is a big ask.

I think we a better off just finding a short term solution to our goalkeeping issue on loan in this window and keeping Mangala. I just don't see us being able to use that £30m to good effect this window.

Relegation release clauses should help.

Players are mercenaries, a good contract with a sensible release clause and a stonking bonus for staying up will still be attractive.

Maybe. I think those players will probably decide to stay put or seek other opportunities though. It's not impossible, but it's certainly a hard sell.

We signed players last January in a far worse position than we are now, even with an FFP sanction over our heads
Depends what the points deduction is going to be; 10+ points puts us 6+ points behind Luton (who currently have a game in hand over us). The uncertainly in and of itself makes us an unappealing prospect.

Yep, a team with a significant points deduction is an especially poor attraction, given that if the EPL wants to make an example of Forest (you know, like they are seemingly trying to do to Everton) it would make relegation more probable, and who’s going to sign for a team for five months on Premier League wages followed by (either) a massive reduction in salary next season in the Championship, or having to find another club in the summer?

Yes, maybe a loaner or might fancy it, but Forest are clogged with loan players already.

If us & Everton both get a 10 points deduction we'd be 2 points off safety as things stand.

Plus this whole decent players not wanting to join a relegation threatened club doesn't hold water for me.

Look at who we signed last season whilst being favourites for the drop the whole time. And Mangala- an in demand BELGIUM international (earning rave reviews for the national team) looking set to sign for a team in the relegation spots in the French league. Why? Because he wants game time. This & money are the deciding factors in most cases.

No guarantee that Everton do get another points deduction that big. We might get 10, and they might get 2 or 3, or vice versa. The uncertainty doesn't help us though, and will certainly be a factor in any players decision IMO.

I don't agree Ash.

Plus we're not getting a more severe points deduction than Everton.

We'll see though eh.

I don't think anyone knows how many points us or Everton are getting deducted, even the Premier League TBH.

Nothing would surprise me either way, they make up the rules as they go along. Which adds to the uncertainty.

We'll see in the next couple of days anyway. It wouldn't surprise me if Mangala stays, we don't sign anyone and the whole discussion about January transfers is rendered meaningless. 🤣

Belgian. Not Dutch, Belgian.

Wars have started for less.

We were really scraping the barrel for some of those signings though...
Not really. We signed Felipe, Danilo, Wood, Shelvey and Navas. Wood took a while to pay off, but only Shelvey of those is a poor signing. (Scarpa doesn't count as he signed the previous summer, not knowing where we'd be in January.) Am I forgetting anyone?

In fairness, some of them were a bit „2AM in the queue for the Kebap Shop“.
