The Official F.A. Cup Thread, 2023 -24 Season: Bristol City v Nottingham Forest, K.O. Friday 26th January 2024 at 19:45

Will Forest's marksmen kill Cock Robin with our bow and arrow?

  • Yes: 'twas I said the sparrow...

  • No: The robin dodges the feathered missile.

  • Oh bugger... back to the City Ground and VAR!

Matchday Squad
First away game since promotion

Match was crap, lot of meaningless sideways passing and not much action either end. Not sure either side deserved to score let alone win. Danilo’s free kick at the end - less said the better.
Positives - Andrew played well at CB and good to see MGW back. Turner kept a clean sheet with no mistakes.
Fans quieter than I remember but there was not a lot to shout about, chicken and egg with the team performance.

Got to the ground about 2 hours before ko and went in the home independance bar. Wow, like a proper pub who know how to treat customers. Massive tv across the back of the bar with SSN on, great selection of beer and cider for the wrong uns , upstairs they have separate areas for supporters club and a vip section. Tables, chairs setees, hot water in the bogs - like a really nice pub. Outside massive selection of food and yet more bars. The place was busy 2 hours before ko and packed after, everyone doesnt just bugger off. Again it really highlighted how far we are away from the facilities of a mid championship club. Somebody I was with said Forest treat home fans like away fans and sadly that’s how the facilities are.

Spoke to a few Bristol fans and they were all spot on

I walked past that at the end , really well done and keeps people at the ground way after. We could easily do something similar behind the Peter Taylor stand.

Instead we get an open air shed and a large car park.

When I did my tour of the grounds, Brizzle had a rather jolly area out the back of one of the stands with market stalls etc going on. It was a Sunday.

Do we do anything at the CG on non-matchdays?

It must make a fair bit of money for the club even on none match days. £6 for a proper pint of beer, but £4.50 with season card - not sure mine would have worked though!
really was an eye opener.

No idea on the ratings - I dont think turner is good enough for us, but last night he was solid and didn’t put a foot wrong. Yates had a mare!

It’s the FA Cup.
It’s why the competition is so great.
Lower league teams get the chance to raise their game, and often do.
Long live the FA Cup.
Long live giant killing (but not in our replay).

City played well. Organised, worked very hard, had a couple of moments and got back in shape to restrict us.

Obviously we're largely playing the same team game after game as well. Certainly wasn't as bad as a few have made out (especially on twitter).

Even Atwell had a good game.

Shame we couldn't nick it and avoid a replay but another game could be seen as a good thing.

A poor game with very little quality. We played with a bit of tempo for about 25 minutes just before and then after half time but that soon fizzled out.

We were hopeless for most of the first half. Yates was poor and looked like he'd had a bet on getting a yellow card but at least he showed up. The other 2 in midfield were absent for the first half an hour. Mangala improved thankfully but still spent the rest of the game playing the easy pass when it was crying out for someone to play with a bit of intent. Danilo was lucky to play 90 minutes, however credit to him for convincing MGW, etc to let him take that last minute free kick!

The full backs were poor, hopefully the AFCON lads are back soon as we really don't want to be triggering any buy clauses for either Montiel or Tavares. The CB's did okay against a pretty powder puff attack, especially once Murillo had put his studs in. Oba had a pretty comfortable evening & Murillo showed his value by being the only player at the club that can fizz a ball through the lines to our forward players.

Wood struggled a bit, he didn't get enough service but his touch let him down too often and he failed to really unselttle their CB's, Dickie who I've always rated had a good game up against him. CHO showed flashes again & should have scored but still looks like he's playing within himself. I felt a bit sorry for Nico, he was poor but it's annoying watching him have to run up and down the right, tracking their LWB whilst the players that are playing in his natural position play so poorly. MGW gave us a spark & immediately looked a level above once he came on at HT, hopefully he's fine now for the rest of the season.

Fair play Trees, we had a right go.
I can't see us winning at your place but we will come and give it a go.
I hope you liked the 'Ashton gate' experience, it's certainly different from football back in the day.
Hopefully your journey was trouble free and the fella that called cider 'shit' managed to sample some and had a headache of all headaches! 😉
See you in a couple of weeks. 👍

Turner didn't have a shot to save.......

I’m not sure who commentated on my stream. But I did meet David Phillips at a game not too long ago and he was an absolutely lovely bloke. I was the only person who recognised him though so maybe he was just pleased🤣

Or maybe it want even him and it was just random bloke!!
Bizarrely I half recognised instantly forgettable and now bearded 'defensive winger' Paul Anderson the other week outside the ground.

I'm going to pretend the David Phillips last night was a different one.

Phillips was on one of those podcasts a while back. His recollection of his time at Forest was decidedly sketchy and not at all accurate. He thought we went down as soon as we sold Stan!

I'm not surprised that the lower league clubs put up such stern resistance.

When I played for the school team, we used to play an annual game against the old boys, who (of course) were older, stronger, more experienced and, usually, better players than us. But the master who coached us had experience at a League club and he organised us so well that we always put on a good show.
