Gelson Martins

Nuno Espírito Santo is close to securing a compatriot as his first reinforcement at Nottingham Forest: Maisfutebol has learned that Gelson Martins is in advanced negotiations to leave Monaco for the English club.

With no space in the Principality's emblem in the current season, the Portuguese winger received some inquiries from the United States and Russia, but he always made clear his preference for the challenge in the Premier League.

At 28 years old, Gelson only has six months left on his valid contract (until June 2024), which is why Monaco also welcomes a permanent transfer in January 2024.

Gelson Martins, remember, left Sporting in 2018 to represent Atlético de Madrid, in an agreement that involved the departure of Argentine striker Luciano Vietto to Alvalade. He only spent half a season in Spain and then moved on to French football

He was decent a few years back. Left out of the squad completely this season.

You’d think even if we get him (valued at 2.5m, was 30m), we’d want someone who is fit enough to start.

The only African player not going to AFCON based on recent International appearances.

As someone who has represented Portugal at senior level you wouldn't expect him to appear at AFCON would you?

I'm sure we will be linked with a lot of players, but would rather we look at ones on an upward trajectory rather than down. I guess this would be a cheap one or even a free.

Lets hope any Mendes connection brings us more Jotas and Jiminez's than Dias's and Goncalves's

Sauce salad?
Skillful player if it's who I think - on a cut price could be a good signing - he's had fees of 22 and 30m in his last two transfers. Agent fall out apparently the reason why he's out of the squad - manager likes him but can't use.

I don't normally share highlight videos because they normally show ao much stuff that you believe you are potentially signing the next Messi but this one seems to be the opposite and has been compiled by an enemy of his!

I have seen him play but not for ages and he's good imho, can play in a role we need strengthened and may well be low cost due to the contract situation but whoever edited this video has done him dirty!

If we sign him, do we have to drop someone else out of the 25 man squad immediately in January to play him, and can we do that?

Pacy right winger on not much more than a freebie. I’m fine with taking that chance, as long as we don't commit to a stupid contract with him.
Agreed.

Feels a reasonable punt. Although in general I would rather we identified a couple of players with real quality then a bunch of ok signings

It’s a bit of a free for all period, I think…but it’s a good question ?

What dates are the January transfer window?

The winter window in 2024 opens on January 1 and closes on February 1 at 6pm ET.

What are the rules and what does the winter transfer window mean?

Simply put: from January 1 to the deadline on February 1 all 20 Premier League teams can buy and sell as many players as they want. They will only be able to register 25 senior players in their squad at the end of window

I’m actually unsure about that rule now, further reading does imply that you can only change the squad AFTER the window closes. I’m sure someone more educated will clarify soon 😂

Would appear Nuno wanted him at Wolves.

Hasn’t played at all this season, so a few weeks to get his fitness going I’d assume.

If its for a small fee and not a mental contract, he might be worth a punt. Sounds like he might even cost less than what we are about to receive for Scarpa.

A low cost addition for the winger role leaves more money in the pot for a quality keeper and another striker too. Could be smart business if Nuno can get the best out of him.

Exactly - all depends what we spend elsewhere. From what I know about him is he is a very similar player to Elanga.

It's clear he wants pace from the bench like he had at Wolves, I remember when he used to bring Traore on all the time - everyone would shit themselves whenever it happened (including Traore). It wouldn't suprise me if we bring in a couple of wingers to be honest, we are massively lacking in that area. We basically only have two & we saw on boxing day how effective it is having two complete wingers instead of players just filling in.

Don't all black players go to the AFCON?

Think we might make a few bob from player sales this January. Scarpa is off, we'll probably sell McKenna, Serge and Kouyate might attract Saudi interest, to name a few.

If we can basically swap Scarpa and McKenna for Martins and Nino then I think that'd be a positive start to the window without really spending a penny.

Assuming Santos, Tavares and Origi all return to their parent clubs, there will be three loan slots available too.
