Neco Shay Williams

Forget Spence, Davis and Garner ffs.

They aren't our players and keep harping on about them will make no difference. Lets concentrate on the current failures of the players that we do have.

According to the Guardian it was Coopers idea to move away from signing Spence and instead get Neco Williams.
Cooper maintained throughout the summer that the level of recruitment was necessary to create a squad capable of staying in the Premier League. He was the man who decided trying to re-sign Djed Spence was not worthwhile, so the club gave him Neco Williams, and Cooper rejected the idea of bringing back James Garner and Philip Zinckernagel, despite the suggestion greater continuity would be helpful.
It could be bollocks. But the fact remains Neco Williams was signed 10 days before Djed Spence signed for Tottenham at a point when no one realised that our transfer kitty would eventually top £150m. To those who say it was impossible to sign Djed, with the wages we are paying other players, I say rubbish.

What Champions League football? He's barely played 2 minutes of Premier League football.
The lure of London and Champions League football would be pretty huge, I'd expect. I'm sure he didn't think, "Hmm, I'll move to Spurs for lots of money and a place on the bench if I'm lucky". I'm sure he thought he could break into the team, time will tell, an injury or two and he will be playing in Europe's top competition.

Seeing as £17m pretty much gets you an average squad player in this league I'm not sure we can complain.
I think we can considering he's not an average player at this level.

I had my doubts about him on the right but Christ, watching him play on the left is terrifying

I just don't think the lad is very intelligent.

He has the attributes. He's quick, he's strong, he's a good tackler, he can kick a ball well, but it's the glue holding those attributes into being an effective player (i.e. his tactical ability) which is holding him back.

Earlier on when he had chances to get forward in the season he was crossing and when they did beat the first man they were technically fine crosses but tactically the wrong option (e.g. he'd just crossed it because he was in that area of the pitch not seeing whether there was actually anyone to cross it to.

So often he just decides to stand off attackers and let them do what they want when we see opposition full backs pressing at the very least and putting physical pressure on the attacker. Then we see the odd thing where he will just tackle someone in a silly area where it's unnecessary and getting a silly card or something.

I didn't think he was much worse at LB than he is at RB which really says a lot about his ability.

That it seems to be mental rather than technical means that the right coach can possibly work on this in training but then that depends on if it's mental (because he doesn't know what to do and needs that area of his tactical knowledge enhancing) or mental (because he's too unintelligent to take it in even if he's told and won't make the grade anyway because of this). But none of us actually know him so hard to gauge how intelligent he really is.

Cooper clearly knows him from being a kid and stands a decent chance of getting the best out of him... but this won't happen overnight.

In my view he’s a highly-promising young player trying to get to grips with his first season in the PL as part of a newly-promoted team struggling to find its way. It’s clearly evident that he’s been going through a bit of a crisis of confidence but as the side improves I’ve no doubts that so will he.

If Toffolo has taken a knock, I expect this fella will be facing his old club at left back.

Much like Awoniyi, it’s clear why Liverpool released him. He doesn’t fit into a classic position. By that I mean, he’s not a full back because his defensive decision making and positioning is all wrong. He is good going forward but then can’t seem to cross that well and not sure of his pace either so wouldn’t suit playing as a winger. So he’s marketed as a ‘luxury’ wing back who only suits a certain formation and style of play.

He's only young and has time to improve but you can tell why Fulham had no interest in signing him after promotion
I hadn't realised until I was looking at his stats, that he only made 15 appearances for Fulham. I'd assumed it was more than that,

I think they only loaned him in January though, without checking not sure who played the rest for them.

Denis Odoi was their first choice RB until January, when he left. Neco's main competition was Kenny Tete, who played more games.

This is the only part of our transfer situation I have first hand knowledge of, speaking to his Dad on the train to Wembley it was made very clear that DJed would not be joining us, he wanted to go to Spurs and he did.

Whether what Unwin says regarding the situation is true or not, the decision was made.

We will all take our stances re reports in the press, for me none of them just like us will know the full story whether that be Taylor, Unwin or anyone else.

Unbelievable that we paid £17m for him. Liverpool saw us coming there.

His confidence is clearly low but what concerns me is that he is completely unable to do the basics. The touch and control, a simple pass, looking up to see where a team mate is, it's basic stuff really and Williams is standing out at the moment as the poorest of a poor bunch. He looks massively out of his depth.

It's all about mid-table...
Neco has been a shade disappointing, thought he started the season brightly but gradually dropped off a bit.

Never worth price tag but needs a bitta loving and confidence from Coops.

"decided trying to sign Spence was not worthwhile" - this could have been exactly because Cooper knew Spence didn't want to come.

I'll also mention that Spence wasn't near as good towards the end of the season, to the extent some on here were suggesting success had gone to his head and he'd stopped trying.
