Chuba Akpom

So far I make it 89 Championship appearances and 8 goals.

Woeful scoring record? Tick
Dubious appearance record indicating potential biscuit? Tick
Probably earns a fat salary? Tick

When do we sign him?

I love that every summer the forums solution to solving the striker problem is to sign a 20 goal a season player in their prime...

The reason we take punts on Akpom type players is that a) it's all we can afford b) better/wealthier clubs are the ones who actually sign the good strikers and c) it's all we can afford.

We also probably need two or three strikers, they don't all need to be prolific.

Yes, proven goalscorer's go for big money and we cannot currently compete there but does that mean we should take a punt on players like Akpom when we know they will never come good? It's throwing good money after bad. If we have to take a punt (and we do) then go homegrown, or raw and hungry lower league.

Not sure he'll be quite the deadly force he was without Chris O Grady alongside him.

What's not to like Alf?

He knows England, he knows the league, he knows exactly what is needed to get us out of it.

Much better than watching some Portuguese kid no one has ever heard of struggle to make his mark because he can't adapt.

Because Akpom has experience in this league he can slot straight into being shit almost immediately.

I'm expecting three forwards through the door. If he comes in as number three, or even four with Grabban, there are worse back ups. But he probably won't. 90% of transfer speculation comes to nothing.

Akpom wouldn't be cheap though; Boro want to recoup their £2.5m. So not only is he shit (and worse than the strikers currently on our books), but he'd cost a large chunk of our transfer budget too.

I'd genuinely rather we signed no one than make signings like this. Does nothing to improve the team and is a complete waste of what little money we have.

I think it depends if you are counting forwards as wide players too. I can't us signing three strikers when we already have Grabben and Taylor on the books, unless one or both are moved out. It was said last summer, but when you have someone like Grabben who if fit will start, it is an extremely hard sell getting players (especially young players) to come and play second or third fiddle. The guys you get are Taylor (who we can safely assume came due to the sizeable contract he was given) and Murray (due to his relationship with the manager and where he is in his career).

Also don't forget, we signed 16 players last year and if you believe rumours and the opinions of those on here about what we need its a backup goalkeeper, a left back, a right back, another centre back, a ball playing central midfielder, two wide players, a number ten and a couple of strikers. That's ten players, I just can't see that high of a turnover.

He has been offered on a Free Transfer to Millwall - Good luck with that one Chuba if you keep up your current prolific goal scoring form down there

You make a good point but Akprom is a proven failure in the championship. So if you gave me the choice I’d rather have Jephcott, Charles it the Blackpool lad.

It's a funny old world when the Post are calling out other people's scurrilous rumours.

Reminds me of a friend of mine when he got married - He said '' I thought I was marrying a beautiful woman - When I got to know her family, I realised I had married into the Circus '' :)

Given that the Post think it's bullshit, I fully expect us to sign him on a 4 year deal within the next week or so.

On a par with OG in the goal scoring ratio then :)
