Thanks from Oxford United

Back in July I posted on here asking for support for our new stadium proposal.

To those of you who responded to our County Council survey I'd like to pass on the thanks of all Oxford United fans, as yesterday Oxfordshire County Council agreed to let us have the land. It's a massive step for us, as there has been a concerted campaign from local NIMBYS, Green Party activists, and yesterday even some loon who spoke at the council meeting saying it shouldn't be built as nuclear warheads are transported past the site and we could all die!

Hopefully you won't mind if I come back again asking for help, if it's needed during the planning stage, as our campaign to get other football fans involved was a great success. Thanks again.

PS: You may recall that we signed ex Arsenal and Barcelona youngster Marcus McGuane from you a couple of years ago. He stated very well, then had a longish term injury, but this season has been absolutely immense and looks a class above League One.

Good to hear this!

Its not often a club manages to defeat the NIMBYs.

Pop back whenever you like, we love rigging influencing a poll or vote around here.

Good to learn that the application was a success, and that McGuane is doing well.
We had high hopes when he signed for us, but for whatever reasons it didn't work out for him on Trentside.
Good luck for the season... however as an alumnus of Exeter Uni I would like to see them get promotion.

That's good to hear for your club Col. In terms of convincing the county council to ignore spurious objections of local NIMBYs, I can only assume that the land in question isn't next to a river?

Thanks for the kind words everyone. When I lived in Wilford for 8 years I enjoyed the odd visit to the City Ground, when we didn't have a game or were too far away to get to, and always found Forest fans to be what I'd call "proper" fans, knowledgeable about the game and other clubs, and appreciative that we can all have our ups and downs, usually through no fault of the fans.

To answer a few things, in no particular order:

No, it's not near a river. It's actually next door to the relatively new Oxford Parkway Station, which connects with London Marylebone and the Midlands, and next to the A34 dual carriageway, which is the main North/South road route in the area. This is one of the reasons why the NIMBY and Green Party opposition has been so ridiculous, often citing traffic chaos and rampaging hooligans to frighten those local to the site. It's as near perfect a site for a football stadium as you could get.

From day one I could see that McGuane was a player. We initially had him on loan, and if I remember rightly Chris Houghton was your manager. I never felt Hughton favoured younger players, and seemed to rely on his old boy network. I think we benefitted from this and made moves to make the transfer permanent after a few months. We only paid a couple of hundred grand for him, although I suspect there may be some additions to the deal, like a sell on percentage. I think he's the sort of player that would have flourished under Steve Cooper.

I won't outstay my welcome, but might pop back on with a few updates if people are interested. Good luck for the season, I think you're on the right path now, and hopefully there's no second season syndrome.

A lot of players were bought around this time and because of the success cooper brought about we outgrew them quite quickly. Glad he’s found form somewhere else though. Maybe he’ll get a shot at the championship with yourselves 🤞

Maybe both Oxford & Exeter can get automatic promotion - at least it means Derby don't finish top 2

When I did the 92 I was given a personal tour round the ground by the commercial manager. Very pleasant man explained how you had been treated by Firoz Kassam, sounds a great guy!

Thanks to that pleasant experience, I have a soft spot for the club. Best of luck in the future.

My "river" comment wasn't serious Col. It was a flippant reference to the issues NFFC is having with the River Trent rowing community over the proposed City Ground redevelopment.

Ah, yeah of course, the Peter Taylor Stand development. I followed that with interest when I lived in the area, and hoped it would have been built by the time I moved away last year. It would make a great ground even better, if the plans that I saw came to fruition.
