Pelé, Rest In Peace

Pele did it all before it all became popular. Kids today sadly probably don't know about him. Ignorance. Just loving social media and superficial stuff.

I can count on one hand those moments in football that speak directly to the four year old me dreaming of one day winning the World Cup. Kempes in 78' and Tardelli in 82' come to mind immediately.

At the very top of that list, and by some distance, is the grainy black and white footage of a 17 year old Pele crying uncontrollably as he's carried by his team mates after winning the 58' final. If I could live one moment in football that would be it.

But can he play left back ?
João Saldanha, the coach who helped shape that fantastic 1970 side, once said: “Ask me who is the best right-back in Brazil, and I’ll say Pelé. Ask me about the best left-back or midfield man, or the best centre-forward. Always I must say Pelé. If he wants to be goalkeeper, he will be. There is only one Pelé.”

Never before and never again will there be a more successful, gifted and dedicated yet humble football player.

I saw Pele at a memorabilia event in Jan 17 at the NEC.

Sadly the £295 fee to meet for a photo and autograph was out of my price range at the time.

Wish I had done it now. One of the greatest sportsman ever.
