The only way we kept Lodi ( and Mrs Lodi) was to move the club to the south of France
Indeed. Not really much the club could do about that really. Hopefully Tavares can prove us wrong and fill the void left by Lodi. Unlike the chaos of last summer, there does seem to be some strategy behind our incomings this time around so I am going to trust that the club have done their homework on this chap.

Do you think so? I didn't really see that at all.
There were a couple of moments where the ball almost got away from him but he was quick enough to get it back under control pretty much immediately. I'm not saying he's the finished article but he seems to be wayyyy better than I thought he was.
He's still young & hasn't been Cooper'd yet either

So if I’m reading this correctly Djed Spence who isn’t good enough for the prem took Tavares to the cleaners in the cup. I hope he’s stepped up since then.

Comparison with Djed:

I have been struggling to remove this memory and thinking from my own head but you have to think it’s one game. You could see a one off of any of our players and make the same assessment.

He is clearly a physical beast and has had a team like arsenal consider him worthy of a pick up, followed by a successful loan spell in France.

Try and replace that with the thought of Nuno and Elanga running down the left

Looks decent in that video tbf, and I can’t quite work out if he’s left or right footed. Hope he’s learnt how to defend though, gonna need to here

Depends how you look at it, Tavares had a mare & yet Spence still didn't manage to score or assist so 🤷‍♂️
Also, if I remember rightly makeshift left back Jack Colback had Bakayo Saka in his back pocket for the whole game so maybe that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Yeah a little bit. He’s got very fast feet and a sharp turn of pace, I just think it looks like he shows a bit too much of the ball to opponents from the little bits there is to go on. Good luck to the lad though.

Worth the risk on loan to see what he's like. After his horror show 2 seasons ago I would have been worried if it was a transfer.

I wonder if he's being considered as both another option at LB/LWB but also as a potential primary option further forward in a LW position. We could set up in a 4-2-3-1 like this:

Turner
Montiel Felipe Niakhate Aina
Yates Danilo
Elanga MGW Taveres
Awoniyi

The wingers would be expected to hug the touchlines and carry the ball, and the full backs would be underlapping because of that, natural for Aina anyway as a right footer. Would then add more presence in central midfield areas on the attack allowing Yates/Danilo to be more dynamic box to box players (taking it in turns anyway) rather than simply holding position. when you're in the final third you end up with something fluid like this if we're attacking down the left wing for example:

---------------Turner---------------
---------Felipe------Niakhate------
----Montiel-----Yates---------------
-------------------------Aina---------
--------------MGW------------------
-------Elanga---------Danilo--------
-------------Awoniyi-------Taveres--

Possibly but I maintain we can’t play 2 in midfield, certainly not with Danilo and Yates.

In a 3-4-1-2 then I agree. Your wing backs either go too far forward and you're far too susceptible on the flanks for the CM's to cover, and if they drop too deep then you're just penned in on the edge of your own box and the CMs just end up sat protecting.

But in a 4-2-3-1 it'd be a bit different. In defensive third it would condense into a 4-5-1, with Taveres, Elanga and MGW all capable of doing the defensive work that someone like Johnson is not.

And going forward, it's far more fluid than the 3-4-1-2, and so like I put a couple of posts up, Danilo/Yates can be more dynamic as Aina/Serge/Montiel can tuck in and cover.

4-2-3-1 in that set up is far more fluid than 3-4-1-2, more adaptable to certain phases of the game in that set-up and more adaptable player wise to shift formation if you find yourself needing to play slightly differently.

We didn't play 4-2-3-1 once from the kick-off last season. It's something I think we should consider, especially for games we're expected to control, like games vs Sheff Utd at home. We switched to the 4-2-3-1 with 20 minutes to go and Sheff Utd never got a look in after that. Had we not made the change we probably wouldn't have won the game and might even have lost it.

Just trying to nip it in the bud early! It's not actually hard to spell. Unlike Batshuayi 🤣
Just you wait until we sign that Greek goalkeeper, that poor bastard is going to get his name butchered every time he is mentioned!
