Williams will probably be OK for us next season but he'll never be a full back at this level IMO.

No stand out physical attributes, poor footballing brain and ordinary on the ball. £17m for him is an incredible bit of business...for Liverpool. To put it into context, using reported figures (transfermarkt) he cost us roughly the same as Aurier, Felipe, Niakhate, Boly and Toffolo combined.

Issue being that to give him more protection, it means Brennan dropping deeper, or a change in formation where one of the front three get dropped…
Seeing as we seem unable to score more than 1 goal in a game, sacrificing attack to strengthen defence doesn't seem too outlandish to me.

He cost more than Villa paid us for Cash. Let that sink in.

My issue with him is you can spot in the first 5 mins when he is going to get run ragged in a game.

Newcastle on the opening day, West Ham a couple of weeks ago, last night.

For me, we have to do more to protect him when it's plainly obvious it's going to be a problem.

We really needed both Lodi & Aurier in these past 2 games, they are such a vast improvment - especially as we have generally looked very good in central defence recently - as Felipe is doing his Prime Sergio Ramos impression most games.
You can spot at 2pm when his name is on the team sheet that he’s gonna get run ragged.

There was a poll on a different thread with reference to who was our worst signing of the summer ‘22. I don’t think there’s any doubt now who that is …. looking at that list above of full backs versus what we’ve paid for this guy makes me feel a little queasy. I thought / hoped there might be a player in there but the scouse bastards have had our trousers, pants and socks down with this lad I’m afraid.

Still think he might end up as a central midfielder and be okay there.

I could see it, he’s not much of a defender at all. There was times where he’d play apart of the front three as a sub and he didn’t look any worst than being at right back.

Although he’s a bit like MGW where he can run past the ball or just plain lose control.

I’m fine with that anyway, our away tactics don’t ever ever work so maybe we help our fullbacks for once.

Yeh, he's lightweight, can't tackle & lacks positional awareness.

He'll fit right in.

In all honestly though- he doesn't have a single attribute that makes me think he'd make it as a central midfielder.

Not one.
Agreed. One of his worst traits is a clear lack of footballing intelligence which sort of rules him out of central midfield. At a decent level it does anyway

Not one.

He likes a tackle, is energetic, reasonably comfortable on the ball and has an OK cross. He has the attributes to play a mezzala type role (sorry to the oldies who hate these terms).

And moving him into central midfield and giving him that mezzala type role immediately removes his two biggest weaknesses on the pitch: Getting done at the back post by someone stronger and taller than him, and his complete inability to anticipate through balls.

If Williams can't teach himself to defend those through balls then he's never, never going to make it at the top level as a right back or right wing back and so there's no point continuing to position him there, and if that is the case, and considering we spent £17m on the lad, it's in our interest to explore whether he can be an asset in other positions, otherwise it's dead money we spent.

Edit: In terms of how that would work in a starting eleven, it'd be something like this (excuse liberally picking players not at the club to prove a point):

-------------------Navas-------------------
---Spence---Felipe---Niakhate---Lodi---
--------------------Rodri-------------------
----------Williams--------MGW-----------
--Scarpa-------------------------Grealish--
-------------------Awoniyi------------------
Where both full backs overlap, both wide wingers cut inside and Williams drifts into the space and links them both, and can also the cover the space vacated by Spence on any counter.

Just to clarify I'm not in any way saying this is the shape we need to adopt, just that if Williams can't improve his defending then this sort of role in a side is his natural progression.

Centrocampista was always my favourite one.

He needs a loan to the Champ for any year or two to develop.

Not everyone can go up the leagues easily like Brennan.

Think we’ve all got the message now about what you think of the lad. Don’t you think it’s about time the pitchforks went away for a bit
Well said, I find it sad that people have to say the same things over and over again. I know it’s a forum but for fucks sake give it a rest. I am retired and cannot find the time to be on here, and yet I guess many on here are working ,well concentrate on your jobs Easter holidays start tomorrow.
