Neco Shay Williams

Neco is not a smart enough a player. And his other qualities are not strong enough to make up for the lack on intelligence. Given that his other qualities (crossing, positioning, mental fortitude etc) are all mediocre. Unless his game elevates substantially he will never be a Prem level player. I mean, today, it took him what, two minutes to play an aimless ball right in the middle of the park in our back third. This is not the first, nor second, nor third time he has done this. He's a liability. He's a Championship level player, and an average one at that.

Neco didn't do too badly I thought. But maybe I need to go and watch the game again.

He's a wing-back and that's why he plays so well for Wales, who set up in a system he prefers.
Agreed. We'll always point fingers when we lose 4-0. Reality is, we're missing half a team through injury. Neco didn't have a bad game at all.

Lacks composure, lacks any kind of strength, lacks game nous and lacks skill. Deadset liability. You might as well have a lamp post play in n his position.

I get that he’s young but at least show us some hope that there is potential that we can develope.

Wast of money

To echo a post above I think it’s the back 4 situation Williams can’t do.

He was bought (Expensively!) to play in Cooper’s preferred wing back role with 3 at the back to take advantage of his energy and crossing skill.

At right back I’d say the likes of Lichaj and Gunter were better than him.

If we stay up I’d like to see him go out on loan to the champ and build his confidence.

Neco wasnt brought in as a full back for a start. Why people are targetting him when there were far worse players on the pitch yesterday is baffling!

Lets give a free pass to Worrall ey, because hes one of our own. Lets ignore the fact that he constantly passes it the opposition, often under zero pressure.

If Neco isnt good enough, then blame Cooper for playing him there? Ask why Colback started with Danilo and Mangala on the bench. Ask why we persist with Wood?

You csn scapegoat all you like but yesterday was down to everyone, lets just be honest here. Negative tactics, poor individual performances and poor selections.

I think those that travel deserve more on the road, its f***ing terrible, week in, week out. We give the opposition absolutely nothing to worry about and simply hope to snatch a goal, its beyond dull and its not working.

He doesn’t lack skill imo

At Premier League level. He cant defend, he’s not strong enough, he’s not good in the air, he’s not rapid, he can’t dribble, he can’t cross, his decision making is questionable. Looks an absolute terrible signing. As for people saying he wasn’t bought as a right back and can only play as a wing back then the guy has no career in football if hes that limited.

He wasn’t solely responsible for yesterdays disaster, there were so many, but we are so vulnerable when he plays And always becomes the oppositions target. We’ve won 2 premier league games when he’s started, the second one Leeds, was when he was moved from the RB spot for Aurier.

Yep and guess what, Dyche will know all about that and he has McNeil wide left sending in cross after cross. I thought they were very unlucky against Villa.

We'll never know but I think the consensus was he was a Cooper signing, which is probably backed up by how much he has been used recently in various positions (he played ahead of Scarpa on the left the other week iirc, who clearly isn't a Cooper choice).

He might be an OK right wing (just Ok) but he is a liability defensively. Look at his performance for their 2nd goal, simply shrugged off.
He was shrugged off like that all game.

For me he needs to either bulk up in the summer, we need to protect him better (you are then asking Johnson to do a defensive role) or find a new position - he simply won't make the cut at this level when small weak wingers like Benhrahmer (did the same in the previous game) are both outpacing you & shrugging you off the ball.

Forest stopping kicking the ball to the oppos under no pressure would help somewhat.

Worth remembering the initial transfers were purchased to fit a 352. We couldn’t make that work in the prem, so has affected so many other things as we’ve switched to a 451.

The criticism he's receiving is similar to Johnson before the world cup (myself included). Can't cross, pace doesn't translate to the Prem and not strong enough.

A run of Prem games has turned Brennan into a good Prem forward now. Williams is the same as Johno in age, but has played even less first team football. With Serge out we're going to have to suck it up and hope he can turn it around, just as Johnno has.

I'm not having that he was poor as a wing back though in an attacking sense. He was our most creative and dangerous player according to the stats and was decent going forward whilst those around him were poor and strangely looks solid at LB.

He needs to drastically improve his defensive ability at RB and let's hope he doesn't drop the ball next week just as he did in the return fixture.

He was pretty shit in a 352 though.
Yeah and has someone else has said, if a wing-back can't adjust his game slightly to play in a flat back 4 then there's something wrong. Especially a young player and even more especially one that was apparently deemed worthy of spending £17m on.

It's not as if Williams is in his 30s and has played wing-back all his career and suddenly is being asked to change.

His most frustrating thing is the complete inability to defend through balls in the channel. Removing the need for him to do that and not having his lack of height being something that can be targeted on the back post would make his good qualities stand out more, and he does have a few of those: ball carrying, passing, pressing, aggressiveness.

Based on those qualities a mezzala type role in central midfield would suit him well I think. I wouldn't mind us experimenting with that next season if we can sign Serge up to another season and if we go back in for Spence.

I do think the situation with Neco is coachable.

He is reasonably fit, mobile, has a decent engine, can tackle well, can kick a ball well, but underpinning all of it has terrible decision making.

Most of the time he simply doesn't seem like he knows what to do. When he gets on a forward run his cross or attempt on goal simply doesn't seem to match what everyone around him is doing.

When he's defending he doesn't either tackle his opponent or stand his ground and make it difficult. He usually just backs off the winger about 5-10 yards away and lets them push forward.

Gnonto did it too, but there was several occasions where he just let Benrahma advance on him which led to chances. On one of them Worrall had to come out from CB to cover the winger because Neco was miles off and then that left us short of cover in the middle because our CMs are all midgets when Yates isn't there.

The coaching staff need to be sitting down with him and showing him how a top PL RB or LB close down against a tricky winger because every time we get roasted by one it's on his side. Other managers are clearly now going to be aware of this and will exploit it when he plays until the weakness is fixed.

He has the attributes physically to make it work but it just looks like he doesn't know how to defend which I guess is worrying but is also not particularly surprising as he's not played too many matches for Liverpool and was only on loan the half season to Fulham. But he is too inexperienced to be in this situation and be doing a good job. Brennan is the same age but played 2 full seasons in L1 and CH for Lincoln and us before this season. Spence played a full season for us and had plenty of apps for Boro (and actually, I don't think Spence is that good a defender either). If we stay up I think even if we get Aurier we need another RB and can then loan Neco out so he can get experience.
