Can't Play Left-Back
We'd be lucky to get Dyche to be honest, though I suspect he'll be waiting for a more established club (someone like Villa, for example).

I dread to think who we'd appoint if Cooper went. There isn't much in the way of good and realistic options out there at the moment. A bad time to be looking for a new manager.
Dyche is probably as good as we're likely to get, or at least in terms of proven in the Prem. I like Dyche a lot, and I think he would come, but I can't see him being successful with these players (and it wouldn't be pretty even if it was successful). Maybe there's a young up and coming foreign coach (probably from the Bundesliga) on our radar, but that would be taking a punt. If the board are delusional enough to think a Tuchel, Pochettino or another name of that ilk would come here then they've lost it completely.

I'm hoping it's all bollocks anyway. Let Cooper work his magic, and stick with him even if we go down. We weren't just waiting 23 years for Premier League football; we were waiting 23 years to rediscover our identity (barring maybe a couple of years under Paul Hart). As the thread title says: Steve Cooper is the MAN!

I think, in truth, there is more chance of me being the next Forest Manager than there is of Pep Guardiola taking over at the City Ground.

I agree. This season was always going to be difficult with such a massive rebuild, no matter who is in charge. We'd be more likely to bounce back up with Cooper in charge than under a different manager IMO.

As I said elsewhere, Coops is beginning to look as if he's struggling. I don't want anyone else at the moment, he has done enough to deserve time, but football is a savage master and it's very much results orientated. Owners jealously guard their money and if they feel they have dished it out and are not seeing returns, we've all seen what happens.

The fact that we're debating it and there are stories (all very much third hand and uncorroborated) shows that the situation is very fluid.

All the brave talk about top 10 finish when we were buying our bunch of players, has now fizzled out. The fact is we spent money we've not had for many a year and we have discovered that even that amount is not enough to buy a team, when others are spending the same amount on one or two players.

We have to hope that team selection and the training over the last couple of weeks has worked a miracle and we get two good results next week and stem the rumours.

I think most on here know how I feel about the decimation of a very good team last season.

We only needed 4 or 5 quality signings to add to that team that EM should have moved heaven on earth to keep.

EM and his team know that to spend tens of millions and bring in "names" or supposed "names" gets the majority of fans at fever pitch, so his popularity soars.

But it can soon turn very sour indeed.

Think this is the crux, don't think the owners thinking is aligned with the fans here, he wants to stay up & probably thinks his 150 million investment should rubber stamp it.

Given our more than shaky start & Coopers apparent reluctance to sign a contract, assuming its still on the table, if he is looking around, that shouldnt be a shock.

Dont think theres a better bet than Cooper to turn this around though, he has the respect of players & fans, contract signing aside his heart appears to be in it & these are his players. Less than convinced the owner will see it this way though.

Agree with that apart from his players MASE.

Nature abhors a vacuum.

Football's vacuum is uncertainty.

Insiders, media, fans make every effort to fill it - rarely with fact but mostly with idle speculation, rumour mongering and worse.

There’s ways for Coops to relegate us and keep his job, if we’re battling all year and end up being relegated sometime in April after giving it a right good go then of course he keeps his job.

If we continue throwing away leads and look like we’re as good as relegated by the World Cup break then he’s done for.

In other words we need to start being hard to beat and not throwing games away, personally I think he will get another 3 games making it 10 total to see how we look and then a decision will be made.

I‘m sure the big man is thinking exactly the same.

I don't think he is. And I would argue that we've been embarrassed in our last 3 matches too which I don't think he will have taken well.

I think Marinakis has some pretty big expectations of us over this season and the upcoming ones. The man is used to success both on and off the field in Greece and the impression I get is that someone simply doing 'an OK job' just won't do.

I don't personally agree with it and like many would stick with Cooper regardless unless it really spirals but I don't think it will be acceptable to become a yo-yo club or even a club that over the course of the next five years just treads water.

Spence’s move to Spurs was in the pipeline since January so he was never going to sign for us.

Would have left us with:

Samba, Horvath, Smith
Worrall, Cook, McKenna, Figueiredo, Panzo, Mbe Soh
Laryea
Lowe (having paid over the odds)
Colback, Yates, Garner (late in the window), Ojeda, Cafu
Zinckernagel, Lolley
Grabban, Johnson, Surridge, Davis (having paid over the odds)

That plus 4 or 5 would not have kept us up, no chance. Just a couple of injuries and we’d have been starting players that weren’t good enough last year like Ojeda, Cafu, Laryea and Figueiredo.

It’s not 1977 mate, the gap between the PL squads and the squad we came up with was huge. I would’ve thought how difficult we’ve found it so far would’ve made that pretty obvious to you.

I agree with the sentiment and I also for the record think that talk of Cooper walking/being sacked are nonsense.

The only thing I would add on the squad you listed is that if you compare that to Sheffield United squad that finished 9th, the squad then your proposed low quality Forest is in my opinion better than the squad that they had. As it stands our squad now is way better than their squad, they just need to find a way of getting results.

I think we can turn it around (At least I am hopeful that we can) but if we don't then we will have to examine what went wrong and go again whatever division we are in with Cooper at the helm.

No, you must be wrong. Colback at left wing back is more than serviceable here. Remember, Ryan Yates is better than Bellingham and Pirlo put together. And Joe Worrall is far superior to Franco Baresi and that Van Dijk bloke who used to act but now plays centre half for Liverpool. Figs would have been a fine back up too.

And Davis would have scored at last three hat tricks by now just to prove that Haaland is rubbish,

We'll have to agree to disagree pal.

I don't buy the Spence thing either, MONEY talks. IF we wanted him he stays.

Last season we were ridiculously fortunate with injuries, especially towards the end. I think Mckenna missed a few games and Davis got injured in April but other than that we basically named the same XI each week.

When changes were made, with the exception of Surridge, it highlighted just how poor our depth was and that was in the Championship. We've seen even with all the millions we've spent how high the level is up in the Prem so the likes of Lolley, Laryea, Figuereido and Cafu would've been woefully exposed, almost to the point of it being cruel to pick them.

When did a team last get relegated and keep their manager?

I can't imagine there are many owners who wouldn't roll the dice. It's an unforgiving business.

Farke kept his job at Norwich, and they came straight back up.

Its very rare though and they're usually gone long before the relegation is confirmed. I think one or two clubs, Watford definitely being one, sacked their manager early and then had sacked the replacement before the end as well.

Some big ifs here but if we're down this season and if Cooper is still in the job he should consider himself very lucky. As has been said there are ways of going down, we could go down fighting and it be a close run thing or we could go down with a whimper amongst a sea of embarrassing performances like in 1999. If it's the latter then he'll be gone soon I'd imagine.
