The Squad of 25

Ah, interesting. Why not Taylor or Cafu? Just because Oly have no vacancies for those types of players? Or are they just not good enough for Oly?
Both, in a sense. We don't need a striker and we don't need a no 8, Lyle Taylor is, in my opinion not good enough for us just as he was not good enough for you (even in the Championship), and Cafu did not make it last time he was here.

What formation do you play GBG? Corberan is a 3-5-2 man if I remember correctly. For what it’s worth, Taylor is much better in a two than as a lone striker.

So far, 4-2-3-1 exclusively.

Fwiw I think Taylor could do something of a job for Oly - he isn't half as bad as he's looked for us, but appreciate to get the best our of him he needs to playing in the right system/in s certain way, which is why he did so well for Charlton and Brum on loan; the manager knew how to use him. Sabri did too I think, but he didn't stay long enough to get the chance. Shame as the Taylor I saw for Charlton was superb.

But yeah, it's probably not even something in the offing, and it would seem he doesn't fit your system. If you need a goal threat off the bench to switch to a two up top you could probably do worse, though agree he's probably below the level you want. It would be a punt at best.

Feels like we need a solid 4-2-3-1 option - if we had the confidence to play a 4 against Spurs for example the 3 of MGW / Lingz / Johnson would have has a focal point

Think our wingbacks are too important for that. Be interesting to see what Lodi offers today in a game where we expect more (some!) of the ball.

I agree. Taylor is much maligned, but for me another example of a player that didn't and couldn't fit the system...I always felt he was a bloody good finisher but his all round game was a bit rough and unsophisticated. Alongside the right partner I can easily see how he consistently got decent goal returns elsewhere.

In some ways hes a bit like Sturridge and his case raises the wider issue of why we continue to buy players who are suited to playing a certain way, and then try to play them in systems that don't suit them. Based on other threads I'm already worried about the shit that Taiwo is getting seemingly because hes not a hold up type of 9 and in time it could be Dennis too-both are good players IMO.

Bit surprised no one came in for Lyle before the window closed. Proven at Charlton and Birmingham that he's a capable player at Championship level in the right team.

One other minor note from this - it confirms that Awoniyi does count as "Home Grown", despite just about his entire spell at Liverpool being loaned out to teams in Europe.

Not that we're anywhere near hitting the limit on non homegrown players of course.

Probably too expensive although you'd think we'd be happy to cover the majority of his wages just to get him gone.

Can't Play Left-Back
I wonder if we'll see another player dye his hair pink in place of Lyle for the breast cancer awareness stuff he does in October. I hope so.

Hang on, they’re counting Awoniyi as ‘Home Grown’ even though he was born in (and represents) Nigeria but Scott McKenna (Scottish) is classed as foreign. Who thought up these rules again?!

The big clubs who thought a way round signing young foreign prospects that they could sign, loan out for endless seasons in case they became good enough to play for them, then name as 'homegrown' in the Premier League and European competitions.

He was developed by a club in the English system.

McKenna wasn't.

Daft as it may seem but it also means we can class Alex Mighten as home grown.

Aren’t Mighten’s family British though regardless? I thought they moved temporarily to the US for his dad’s job and he was born there but they moved back when the contract was over? (So he’s dual nationality? Might be wrong).

I suppose there is some logic to it but as stated above, seems very open for abuse by the bigger clubs.

There is no nationality test for homegrown. To be classified as homegrown a player must be on an English (system*) team for at least three years before the age of twenty-one.

* Welsh teams like Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham etc count as being in the English system.

The funny thing about that is that Ben Davies counts as home-grown in Spurs’ PL squad, but as a foreign-grown player in the European squad, because he came through at Swansea.

Even Football Manager used to get that one wrong…

Changes afoot as we move through another window. The current 25 with 22/23 league/cup apps so far:

Keepers:
Dean Henderson - 17
Wayne Hennessey - 3
Jordan Smith - 0

Defenders:
Serge Aurier - 10
Loic Bade - 0
Giulian Biancone - 3
Willy Boly - 6
Steve Cook - 13
Renan Lodi - 10
Scott McKenna - 14
Moussa Niakhate - 2
Omar Richards - 0
Harry Toffolo - 10
Joe Worrall - 15

Midfield:
Jack Colback - 7
Remo Freuler - 15
Morgan Gibbs-White - 15
Cheikhou Kouyate - 13
Jesse Lingard - 16
Orel Mangala - 11
Lewis O’Brien - 14
Ryan Yates - 18

Forwards:
Taiwo Awoniyi - 18
Emmanuel Dennis - 12
Sam Surridge - 13

Bade has gone, and we expect Dennis too. Biancone is out for the season. I'm not expecting to see Richards this season either. Other injuries expected back before end of season. Lingard out for a month, Kouyate 10-12 weeks, Niakhate "Not far off"

Take out Bade/Dennis/Biancone/Richards. Scarpa is in. Leaves another 3 spaces.

Can we take Smith out?

He's never going to play, and even if we had an injury crisis which meant we had no registered keepers, can't we get emergency one anyway?

It's difficult because obviously the club are keeping this kind of stuff reasonably quiet - but if Richards was considered "close enough" to be worth using a spot in September (ahead of presumably Cafu), then I'm vaguely hopeful that he's still got something to contribute this season even if it's taking a month or two longer than expected.

Not sure what the benefit would be. It's not like we need the place for someone else, and even without injuries he'll at least sit on the bench against Man Utd again.

With Biancone out, Bade gone, Dennis looking near certain to go, Surridge reportedly available for loan, and only Scarpa in so far we'd need to sign 3 more players before it even becomes a conversation worth having.

Yes, we can sign a keeper on an emergency loan outside of the window.

And with all due respect to Smith, the thought of him playing in the Premier League terrifies me.
