Does anyone remember League 1 Derby County? (STILL the worst team in history!)

This businessman that is wanting to buy Derby.

How much money does he have?

He's just bought the stadium, which will be a dent in his accounts.

Now he has to find £36m for the taxman, £6m (ish) to pay off creditors at more than 25p in the £ to avoid a point deduction and the best part of £20m to prove funding for the current season.

That's before he buys and funds the wages of a batch of signings (not that he can buy players) to give them even a chance of surviving in League 1.

Oh, and another £6m for Quantuma.

I hope, for his sake, that he's a billionaire and can afford it without it causing him too much stress. I remember what happened to Nigel Doughty.

Reports I have read said he is worth around 252 million pounds. Decent amount I suppose but as you point out with all the expenses he will have to make before even beginning to think about improving the product on the pitch, not sure how much of a long term solution he can be.

Just a random thought. If MA won't deal with Quantuma (and let's be fair who will) in principle is there anything stopping this guy buying the club off the admins, and then basically selling it straight up to MA, including the stadium he has?

Still think he's really their only chance of not going under totally.
Yes. This is possible.

I posted early today that I think Clowes buying the stadium and bidding for the club is just a stop-gap to prevent expulsion or liquidation. Once the ship is steadied they'll sell on. I don't think they've bought this as an investment to build the club up.

Here's my thoughts based on Clowes statement today.

Nah, unfortunately the Clowes deal is exactly what they need really:
1) Unites the club and the stadium again.
2) Will steady the ship financially and most likely see an end to silly celebrity appointments like Lampard and Rooney.
3) Will keep them ticking over until their embargo ends in 2023; at that point they'll be able to attract a much better buyer than tyre kickers (like Alonso and Kirchner), people who are skint (Appleby) and vultures like Mike Ashley.

As much as I'd like to take the piss, they'll be in a far better state 12 months down the line than they are now.

I wouldn’t be so sure about your final couple of points.

At best it kicks the financial can down the road a bit further, but those debts don’t magically disappear.

Unless they liquidate/phoenix/flat pack.

Still plenty of popcorn to eat between now and March I would guess!

They've already shaved £23m off their debt to MSD by buying the stadium and training ground. Owning their ground means they no longer pay rent either too, so they are already better off than they were before.

Football creditors will need to be paid in full for the takeover to complete (as well as a pennies in the pound deal to unsecured creditors). No financial cans being kicked there, it has to be paid for them to own the club.

The only question mark is what happens with the £36m they owe to the HMRC, which is anyone's guess really.

It's extremely unlikely that they'll get liquidated at this point. The worst is over for them (unfortunately). Probably still will be shit on the pitch next season mind, so there's that at least!

Didn't think before speaking, never do
Oh, that talk of opportunities, League One breaks, ol’ pussy
Rang true, sure rang true

Seems it never rains in Pride Park North West Corner
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in Pride Park Corner
But ewe, don't they warn ya?
It pours, ram, it pours

Out of work, farted on my head
Out of self respect, Coleen say’s I’m dead
I'm over-loved, I'm over-paid
I wanna go home

It never rains in Pride Park Corner
But ewe, don't they warn ya?
It pours, ram, it pours

Will you tell the folks at Everton, I nearly made it?
Had offers but don't know which one to take
Please don't tell 'em how much Mel paid me
Don't tell 'em how much Mel paid me
Gimme a break, give me a break

Seems it never rains in Pride Park North West Corner

They've got a fair few millions and a decent enough turnover. Not sure it'll be enough.

They make enough to fund a League One club or a well run Championship club.

If he was running them or Forest for the past few years all the profits his main business makes would just cover the losses.

It does show you how wealthy you really have to be to run a football club.

How much does EM’s main shipping company make per year? I can’t find any accounts for Greek companies - are they private? @GreeksBearingGifts

Clowes owns the ground, not Derby County. Big difference.

What’s Stevey Cotterill up to? 2BF he’s probably too good for them at present

Always thought that them worshiping Rooney is like us worshiping a bad version of Steve Cotterill

Cotterill obviously actually kept us up too though (and we sold our best players to do that)

God we're so superior 🦸‍♂️

I don't much about financial data in general, but CPLP is in the US stock exchange, so you can find some numbers there (e.g. https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/CPLP/balance-sheet?p=CPLP). But I don't know what these numbers mean, in the sense that shipping is not based on a traditional business model. Usually big ship owners have a main corporation but also several other companies linked (or not) to them. And the business structure changes constantly: in 2019 EM merged his tanker division with an American giant (Diamond Shipping), while Marinakis junior leads a different joint venture based in London.

He's certainly not the richest Greek ship owner (somewhere in the top ten, if I remember correctly). Those lists supposedly measuring a person's personal net worth (I have no idea on their accuracy), usually have EM on $700m, and I remember a table with Premier owners and their net worth, and he's at no 18, if that helps.

It honestly is. I know expectations are low but have they forgotten how bad he was? Season before last he literally almost got them relegated (and would have been bad a points deduction for Wednesday).

He only had a modicum of success, if you can call it that, last year as all expectations were off.
