We did work with Mendes but we got his B package and not his A one. Thats the problem with it. Strategy has worked for Wolves and just like Watford with Udinese and our relationship with Olypiakos it can work. However the standard to which we did those strategies were tinpot.

No one’s disputing our strategy was shit but there’s another side to this and that is Mendes taking 13m for a 2M player and then not keeping his side of the bargain and furnishing us with the sort of players that he presumably offered as a top agent. That’s verging on criminal. I’m surprised Marinakis hasn’t blown up

Lee Tomlin who hasn't really played for two years and couldn't get into a poor cardiff side?

Not now obviously but Karanka wanted him and when we had him on line he was doing just as much as Carvalho. Karanka was also a manager who got the most out of him as well. Plus he would have been so much cheaper

I'm not quite sure how Ameobi has suddenly been dragged in as some sort of comparison but I don't care how people want to dress it up otherwise -

The harsh reality is that in the last 3 years Ameobi has made more of a positive contribution to the fortunes of Nottingham Forest than Joao Carvalho and Ameobi has been at another club for 6 months of that.

Just to give some background to this:-

Sammy Ameobi:- 1 contribution every 293 minutes for Forest
Joao Carvalho:- 1 contribution every 244 minutes for Forest

So Joao is more dangerous, has better technical ability and contributes more than Ameobi.

Ameobi is by far better value for money that is unquestionably true.

Still dosen’t mean Ameobi is a better footballer.

Yet one is seen as garbage and the other lauded. I think Joao has had his price tag unfairly thrown at him when in reality it’s the club fault.

What's a contribution and how is it quantified?

I'll go off my qualitative data, Ameobi is better. Ameobi was our only attacking outlet at times, we relied on him so much.

But what does he do for the other 243 minutes? Usually not a lot. Ameobi, for all his flaws, dodgy touches, and mazy runs which usually looked like he himself wasn't sure what he was doing, worked his bollocks off. He was an outlet that allowed us to get out our own half, and always did his defensive duties. I don't think Carvalho is lazy, but games pass him by. Compare him to McGugan (who was lazy and utterly frustrating) but he contributed far more frequently. If you're going to carry a player he needs to be a threat every time he's on the ball. Good luck to the lad, but I just don't think he's right for the Championship.

I think you could close the Carvalho v Ameobi debate by summising the club never looked liked going anywhere with either in the team. To that end, does it really matter?

Well, sort of.
It could be argued that we are still hampered by the legacy of one's time at the club (FFP and all that), whilst the other left no legacy.

Bit boring though, isn't it?

Ameobi wasn't shit, inconsistent at times yes but shit definitely not. His last season with us was plagued with injuries yet he was still our only out ball and managed to remain half decent even in that depressing Hughton team. The season prior he racked up 5 goals and 9 assists in a team that didn't score much, seems like unfair criticism

The only reason we let him go was because his knee went bust and at his age its pretty much game over, he had a 2 year extension with his name on it prior to the injury problems

Id forgotten how literally things can be taken. Ill retract the potentially harsh "shit" statement & replace it with "relative to what we have now, going forward, I dont think Sammy was thee answer"

Everyones shit to me if theyve left the club or achieved nowt. I'd make a crap scout.

Compared to now I agree.

I'm not sure how Ameobi needed to get dragged into it, unless it was to take an opportunistic swipe at a whipping boy.

One's gone, the other's going.

We're finally shedding some of the past mistakes.

A shame it never worked out for him. Seemed a genuinely nice guy, talented footballer but the team was never set up specifically for him to succeed. Whether it should or should not have been is pretty elementary at this point.

Wish him the best and I hope to see him succeed.
