Re: As yet unappointed Manager #50

The problem is Maxi, we see our team as a defensive and attacking unit. The whole split into two mutually exclusive parts. When we play like that, especially with our midfield, we create a huge chasm between the defence plus Yates and the attacking 'unit' of four. The chasm is where the opposition like to play!!

I'd like to see us play as a team.. we attack together and get players behind the ball when we don't have it. The centre backs should press higher and midfield need to use the pitch. I really hope Cooper sorts out the turgid football we play in our own half where (normally) Yates gets the ball from one CB gives to the other then to FB then to CB until one of them plays a chipped ball forward that comes straight back at us.

I cannot remember the last time we had a period of sustained pressure in the opposition's half

What you're quite rightly highlighting can be summed up in 3 words....lack of fluidity.

For the reasons you mentioned in the first paragraph, we have very little competency in linking defence to midfield and midfield to attack. It's not fluid.

The question for me is, is that a system failure or one of the players? A question I'm sure that we'll see answered after a month or so after Cooper gets hold of them.

Nothing wrong with your use of words and it provided the perfect example to lack of fluidity as some people don't always understand what that means in a football sense.

It's going to take some time to implement that style too from the complete opposite of dropping off holding our shape. It could take a couple of months to get it right. We could still be a way off picking up some results especially consistently.

I agree Notcher. Lamouchi brought IMO stupid deep lying "counterattack" system in and Hoots continued it so the squad have been playing way for over 2 years. It worked for a few months before we were worked out. It will take a bit of beating out of the team. Priority number 1) get the defensive line 10-15 yards further up the pitch number 2) press, with the whole team buying into it and working hard (otherwise the press doesn't work). My guess is there will be certain members of the team who won't be up to it....

All that proves is don’t believe everything you read on Wikipedia!

Yeah sure, but they are direct quotes from Cooper pretty much stating what you asked for.

That was from his time coaching some of the best young players in the world, so he may have had to adapt a little when he was at Swansea, but managed to do so and still deliver two top 6 finishes.

I think the football will be better unde Cooper simply because we will play higher up the pitch, full-backs will push on more and we will be more proactive off the ball. That should see us get more of the ball in better positions and spend less time defending deep.

Current players will look much better as a result I reckon.

Yup, rather than having Yates sit back and Garner playing from deep, why isn't Yates allowed to get forward late into the box which he is actually good at? Garner should be making passes and then following them up the pitch and grabbing the odd goal.

It's a bit of a risk/reward situation. You see how teams like Cardiff get numbers into the box and score goals by players getting up in support. We don't score enough, or any, of these 'ugly' goals. You cna't sit back ALL the time and expect outnumbered attackers to do the business.

Probably over thinking this but we're playing higher up the pitch already.

I don't doubt it'll be better. You don't get more defensive than Chris Hughton whether you're winning or not.

I don't doubt he quoted himself as an attacking manager either, when was the last time you heard someone go "I like to make my teams sit back and nick a win if they can"? You're asking to put yourself on the back foot. Mr Hughton himself the other week tried to imply he was pursuing attacking football, justifying it by saying he'd fielded a number of attacking players!

Better yes but it won't be what I'm looking for on previous viewing but we don't appoint managers that will deliver on what I'd be asking for. The few times I've seen us do it, we don't give them a remote opportunity to get it working, despite what seems to me, the blatant obvious benefits of waiting for that to come good.

The really bad football was such a bad topic because we were losing. I think the majority are only interested in the result and will define good/bad football on that basis alone. I personally don't. We got a point against Bournemouth at the CG last year under Hughton and it was one of the worst games I watched because we had no intention of breaking forward and trying to score but people were happy with it because we got a point we shouldn't have got really. You look at Coventry away on game 1 I thought we actually played a half decent game (by Hughtons standard anyway) but because we lost it, my guess is you'd probably find there was a lot more critique of that one if you compared the two.

You can see he told Rio to tweet about him going to Forest.

Rio didn't really care so made a generic statement to the article about him going to Forest.

I think the media pieces about us are complete cringe. Along the lines of why would anybody go there! Forest are a real problem club. No comment about how a manager actually might be responsible for such a poor slide and form for a long time now. The easy option instead of talking rubbish against a nice guy.

For me this is a good job for whichever manager takes charge.

Never agreed with the doom-merchants that we have a poor squad. We don't. We have had poor squads and for me this doesn't come close.

We have a good spine and a lot of attacking talent. A manager that comes in and improves players will see us move up the table fairly quickly. I don't expect anything from this season but let's see individuals improve and as a result the results will too.

Not to mention a manager can come in and get fans onside very quickly with just a few positive performances.

Re: Wudja/Wuntya? - Steve Cooper

He does play similar solid tactics to Hughton, but I've noticed when Cooper was at Swansea that when they did attack on the break, they threw bodies into the box. They always looked hugely dangerous.

I've been watching a few games of Cooper's from last season and with a lot of their goals, 7 Swansea players are in and around the box.

We're looking more at a Lamouchi style again if we appoint Cooper.

Does Cooper take off defenders and put on attackers when his side are winning near the end of games too? I swore that had to be solely a Lamouchism.

All joking aside if it is true that Forest are willing to pay over a million in compensation then they must REALLY want Cooper as there are some good managers currently available for nothing.

I don't think it matters.

This squad is capable of playing in multiple ways and formations. I don't think Reid has done anything particularly sensational today just let the players have a bit more freedom and not given them stupid roles they're obviously not suited to.
