I've suddenly realised that Wayne Hennessey was probably just a fan of On the Buses and was emulating his hero Stephen Lewis (Blakey) in this photo from 1971.

Considering this is for Hennessey, I'm grateful Forest aren't A) goose stepping onto the pitch; or B) wearing armbands emblazened with a certain insignia.

Only joking Wayne, get better soon!

Surely this will mean he will retire... I know some keepers do go on after his age, but a long term (as yet unspecified) injury to a 4th choice keeper in a PL side in their late 30s doesn't bode well for the future.

Sels is clearly fine for us and Matt Turner will no doubt be capable as backup, so we're looking at 3rd choices: Hennessey is probably past this stage if he's injured, old and probably expensive too. Maybe this could be now filled by someone like Bott as it'll be a few sub appearances if one ahead gets injured. Greek flapper needs to go as he's not a keeper.

I'm not even sure he'll end up as a reserve in the division below, it doesn't seem like there would be much point.

On the other hand, how many people would have written off us signing a similar-age reserve keeper from Southampton in 1997?

On the goalkeeping situation. If Sels is unfortunately injured for any length of time, are we really happy with Turner as back up?

I know he's here and we are short of ready cash because of PSR restrictions so possibly keeping him as reserve is financially sound, but in footballing terms is he an ideal second keeper?

At the moment with all fit it is clearly Sels > Turner > Vlach > Hennessey though maybe the last two could be the other way around.

We could actually consider moving on all three in the summer and get in someone who is basically a number 2 and 3 as opposed to a 38 yr old and two expensive internationals who were signed as number 1s.

Depends who we can get though.

Turner is fine as backup and Hennessey would do as a 3 if he's not badly enough injured.

I fail to see the point of a team not in Europe having an expensive number three goalkeeper. They never play and if they did it would only ever be for a couple of games max.

Hennessey has cost us an absolute bomb to sit around doing nothing during his time here.

I’d much rather we did what Wolves did with Tom King (ex Newport, Salford) last summer. A decent, experienced lower league keeper on a free. We can offer them more wages than a starting league one keeper but it costs us chicken feed as a PL team.

If ever they have to play (off the bench once, or a couple of games while the other two are out once in a blue moon) it’s not disastrous but they are mainly there to help out with gk training. Also allows the young keepers to get out on loan and play.

Even better if they are a good character to have in the dressing room.

Someone like Jed Steer or Matt Macey would be fine as our number three next year.

Or even just bring Jordan Smith back; he’s literally played like 3 games in the last 6 years and is 30 in December. Doesn’t play at Stockport anyway so what’s the difference?

2k a week, help him get his coaching badges, counts as club homegrown should we ever get in Europe. Hennessey and Vlachula are probably on about 3m a year between them and neither will ever play. It’s things like this that annoy me when we fail PSR by a few million.

Agree with most of this. We don't need the Greek and we don't need Hennessey for the #3 position.

However I wouldn't have Smith, though the point about matches is true, the thought of having Sels injured or suspended then Turner's playing to begin with and then he gets injured or sent off might be quite remote but it does occasionally happen (and we have had a few occasions where we have needed to play a reserve - Samba coming off at Wembley, Navas and Henderson getting injured last season) and the idea of having Smith anywhere near the PL is quite frightening.

I suppose a younger experienced lower league keeper to do nothing wouldn't be a good idea either, they'd be swapping playing regularly at a good level for not playing at all.

I'd just leave it for whoever is highest up in the academy structure which looks to be Aaron Bott at the moment. They don't need to be registered at all until the season after they're 21 and then you can sell them on and do it with someone else.

Hennessey was our number two keeper for much of his first season, and compared to some that have come after him this season didn’t do too badly really. Bit unfair to say he has done ‘nothing’.

Edit: actually he was our number two keeper for the entire of last season

So given the information available we're spending around £5 million a year in wages on 3 goalkeepers that we can't trust in goal! We need to increase the season tickets a lot more to pay for this incompetence..

Most people accepted he wasn't good enough though, on the occasions when Henderson was ineligible and after his injury before we got Navas in.

Next season he will also be 2 years older.

He was decent on the right wing, though?

Yeah but they hadn't seen Vlach play at that point. I don't think anyone's suggesting signing him up again next season are they? I'm not anyway.
He was signed as a backup to Henderson. Is he even earning that much? Relative to other premier league back up keepers anyway.
