Yunus Musah (BUPA)

This bit...

"We are seeking deep-lying midfielders for a three-man midfield. Musah doesn’t have these characteristics. He can play in a two or three-man midfield but with different characteristics."

...makes me wonder whether the very promising looking Monaco lad bid is maybe us flexing on a Milan target. Probably overthinking it.

Lot of money to spend on a lad that can, according to my Milan-supporting mate, run around a bit and that’s it.

Interesting one Musah, in that he's not particularly well thought of but seems to have an awful lot of experience (and at the highest level - almost 50 international caps and double figures CL) for a 22 year old...

If the rumours are right and we are actively chasing, I wonder about a couple of things with him...

He's very versatile - he's played everywhere but outright striker and CB. Possibly not left wing either though he has games at left mid which transfermarkt often confuses with wing back and left wing depending on system...

He's apparently been playing at right back in preseason? I wonder if, given we have Aina, Williams and Moriera who can play right, Musah is thought of as potential cover there - he has the attributes from a stats pov, assuming hes defensively sound enough.

Stats wise it's his ball carrying that stands out. His decision making is a question mark in most of the bits I've read on him, though lots go back to when he was getting top level games at 17/18, which in itself is something. Also doesn't score many, which I assumed is something we'd want to add from midfield.

If we are serious about this one let's hope we can polish some of that promise into goals.

Have just re-watched his highlights reel and was going to post something similar. His ball-carrying is elite - he looks to me like backup/competition for Anderson, but also someone who can cover almost anywhere we need him to (which we know Nuno values).

He looks a bit greedy (ball hogger!) but if we can improve his decision-making - and that's absolutely something you can coach into a young player - he could well turn out to be a big success here.

Is everyone else's disdain just based on Milan fans or have people watched a lot of him?

So, with Mcatee on the way begs the question is Musah deeper squad depth material or a decoy?
Or given what Dorsett said about us pausing transfers until it was confirmed what competition we were in, perhaps Musah was on the "Conference League list" rather than the "Europa League list" that we are now shopping from?

I hope us being in the better competition means we'll be moving onto better targets...

Better by who? Milan fans?!

(I'm joking btw, though happy for the club to go fit who they want; they're doing a decent job of things in my book.)

I’ve watched a lot of him!

It’s not that he’s greedy, he just doesn’t know when to release the ball and so pauses for a second or two and then the moments gone and he releases it anyway.

I think he’s played almost everywhere because there isn’t a position that he’s any good in. Despite having all the qualities he can’t nail down a position because there’s always a better player in that position.

Allegri seems to think RWB is the role for him, which might work. Allegri likes to defend and that’ll cut down the need for creativity and his pace and power might be good on the break. We’ll see.

I'll happily defer to your opinion, then! And that of @andyd from the other thread. Sounds like you've both seen enough to be convinced he's not up to it.

In which case let's hope it's agent talk...

Well he’s still young and clearly somebody a lot further up the food chain seems to think he’s up to it. As everyone has said, he’s got the attributes. If he arrives I’d love him to succeed.

My thinking is who would I sooner have on the bench? A 26 y/o Jota to cover a forward and midfield role to a pretty passive degree and who's pretty much hit his peak already, or this kid to cover more roles to a more dynamic degree and at 22 with potential to grow too?

In that respect, I think it's a step forward. It's just the pricetag which is a bit irksome.

Has he only been used as RWB this pre season Hux?

Might explain Conte’s interest; he has form for using midfielders/wingers as wingbacks doesn’t he? E.g. Victor Moses

From what I’ve seen. But Milan have been doing the stupid preseason tour of the world to work the brand that clubs of this size do, and I missed those.
