Will Swan, Swans off!

So Port Vale are interested enough to put some time into developing the lad, probably even paying some of his wages in the hope that, in return, his performances will propel them up the league?
You could say they were Swan InVestas. It sounds like a match made in heaven.

Just got his first goal for Port Vale.

According to my Vale mate he hasn't had a huge amount of game time yet but glad he's off the mark now.

If you are a forward player, then the Number Nine is not half a decent mentor to learn from!

If he's as talented as you say he is, then he should be competing at a much higher level at his age.

I know things work differently over there, but I still don't understand what the benefit of sending a talented 21-year-old three leagues below your level is.

He had a decent season with the U23s last year but prior to that he spent a few months on loan at Port Vale (also league two) and was mostly unimpressive. Believe he only scored one for them

Not sure many teams in league 1 would be interested in him, at Mansfield he's going to be working under Clough and will remain relatively close to base. It gives him another shot at proving his self at a level he failed to impress at last time around and potentially increase his value

Well, admittedly some of them were under Hughton, but so far he hasn't shown really any significant evidence that he's a goalscorer in the first team appearances he has made, or even really threatened to score any.

I know he has a half-decent scoring record in the academy sides but these are playing against other youngsters not first team football.

In L2 Swan will get a lot of match experience so they can see what level he will be at - if he does well they could potentially recall him and send him to L1 like they did with Yates.

But he's clearly some distance off the first team so needs to play proper matches at his age as he's not really a kid any more and at 21 will probably give a false impression dominating the sides who play younger kids of 17/18/19.

This is more or less my point. If he's good enough to be considered for the first team in the future, he needs playing time well above League Two to prove it at his age. If he's not good enough, let him go.

I've seen Swan on several occasions and despite his scoring record in those U23 games, I have yet to see anything that is at all indicative he can make the transition from that level to the bhlood and gut of the first team, be it in L2, L1, or the Championship. Our U23's produce good results at that level, but as I have said in other posts previously, there are not that many individuals who look to be able to step up. I hope Will has a greaty time at Mansfield and proves m wrong!

It will be make or break u wud think. The bar has now been set even higher for these youngsters due to promotion. Suppose Mansfield gives him the opportunity to play most games (if impresses) but he’ll need to have good season. One thing that slightly worries me with promotion-I really want us to have at least a couple of local lads playing us and not become a multi-national team lacking local identity. But it’s tough to keep producing the lads to come through especially now in prem.

Yes, I agree about local lads.
However the population of Nottingham compared to Birmingham, Manchester, London, Liverpool and the rest is relatively small.
There will be more Nottingham gems in the making out there, but probabilities are not favourable.

In my opinion, young players like Swan and his modern-day peers suffer from the absence of traditional, competetive reserve-team men's football, which produced countless players who went on to have good, productive careers with us, or elsewhere, in previous decades.

A season in the old Central League would have been enough to fully prepare Will for League One/Two football.
