The Relegation Dogfight 25/26

Louth Red

First Team Squad
The battle to avoid relegation is incredibly tight this season.

First and foremost our focus has to be on ourselves, and not be distracted by the possibilities and probabilities of our rivals results. We must take one game at a time. Spending time, effort and resource worrying about our rivals is entirely counterproductive.

The task is entirely in our hands - if our rivals help us then it is a bonus.

Inevitably there will be fluctuating results and changes in the table but we must hold our nerve. Whilst performance is important it is results that matter.

As supporters we have an important role to back the team and not overreact when things aren’t going as we wish.

The real league season starts on Sunday.

VAR cleared a couple of potential penalties for them when we played them a couple of weeks ago.

If PGMOL were going to cheat Spurs to safety they would have given them. These conspiracy theories are silly.
Not disagreeing with you at all but if I was PGMOL wanting to help Spurs I'd be making the decisions that 'assist' them away from Spurs games so no one could directly point a finger. I'd let the Spurs games run their natural course and interfere elsewhere.

But then I'm a devious underhanded bastard.

Let's not turn ourselves into Alex Jones -style conspiracy mongers. There's enough of that toxic nonsense in the atmosphere without adding to it.
The proposition here is that someone at the top of the PL has instructed PGMOL to rig games in favour of Spurs but not to do so in actual Spurs games. And that every single match official (including VARs) is both informed of this plot and willing to carry it out. And that no word of this evil plot has leaked to anyone at all. Hundreds of people are involved but not one person has objected or leaked it.
It's patently absurd but it's the kind of distorted thinking that is everywhere now.

So you're saying there's a chance? :ROFLMAO:

There is more chance of the four astronauts aboard Artemis II lining up at the back for Forest on Thursday night.

And they are currently over 200.000 miles away from earth.

Exactly. Take the Spurs game for example. Michael Oliver could easily have given that penno when Aina challenged Sarr and I don't think VAR would have overturned it if he had. Also he had plenty of opportunities to give Sangare a 2nd yellow but kept the card in his pocket. It's only natural to remember the decisions that go against us but we've had plenty in our favour this season too.

Pack away the tin foil hats folks.

Unfortunately it's not absurd. We've seen these things happen and whenever there is hundreds of millions/billions at stake there is the chance of corruption, sometimes for far less. You've only got to look at Italian football in recent history, we've been on the end of it with Anderlecht. You've only got to look at Man City to see what some people would do even with unlimited wealth. The examples are endless

Well here we go again ... after a pleasant couple of weeks not having to think about this (and focussing on the baseball) the relegation dogfight is starting to creep back into my consciousness and the uncomfortable feeling in my stomach is starting to return. Can't decide whether it makes me glad to be alive or whether I'd just be better off without it altogether. We're in the home straight now lads ... don't look over your shoulders ... maximum effort to the finishing line and don't forget to dip at the end - goal difference could be key.

f*** I'm nervous.

There's evidence, but more crucially there's an obvious motive.

There's countless examples of things where multi-billions are at stake where things that don't look quite right are exposed many years down the line.

I think it's naïve to assume the Premier League is untouchable in that regard.

I must admit I was fully expecting us to finish the game against Spurs with less than 11 players on the pitch after some dubious sending off but Oliver reffed the game very well. I'm still not totally cured of my conspiracy theorist tendencies as I'm not sure we're late enough in the season for the EPL to show their hand when they may not need to. A part of me still expects there to be some sort of shenanigans that goes on if Spurs look more certain to go down.

I still think that the Premier League would be quite happy for Spurs to go down for a season. With tv deal negotiations coming up they have far more chance of keeping or increasing their value if there is the illusion of things not being a total closed shop for the big six. Spurs make for the perfect sacrificial lamb.

I agree with your broad sentiments, but if Wolves are beating West Ham on Friday night, you can bet that there will be people posting positive comments on here that night and over the weekend leading up to our game. The players are undoubtedly focused on their task, but as fans we all know that where we finish in the table is as much a function of our opponents performance as it is in our own hands.

Michael Oliver is the one PL referee who, irrespective of the teams involved, consistently applies a high bar for offences whether it’s free kicks, penalties or cards.

His decisions at Spurs were entirely consistent with his usual approach.

It’s a frustration that other PL referees are inconsistent both in games, and between games, with their decisions. It is this inconsistency that frustrates fans and inevitably leads to ‘allegations’ of bias.

I have a friend who's a United fan, hates Oliver. That's enough for me, good ref!
