THE RANT THREAD

Our biggest client requested a face to face meeting so I'm not gonna respond with "fuck off I can't be arsed"

Nothing to do with my employer, I manage my own diary and it was my decision to cram it into 1 day because I took Monday off following Wembley

Most people seem to be using "i've got covid" as an excuse to get out of things now... lol

You can't really do anything other than have that meeting though if it's with an important client.

We have been using Teams for much of the last two years for meetings, but that is normal as a global company.

However, in my cases, you cannot beat that face-to-face interaction, dedicated meetings or workshops are much smoother (and achieve more, to be honest) than trying to do everything over Teams with all the possible disruptions that can bring („can you hear me?“ „you’re on mute!“ „brb, kid just threw up“).

I did a huge amount of business travel prior to 2020, and to be honest, I am not really missing much of that recently.

So you planned all of this and are now moaning because you've done it? Ok.

I have mixed feelings on it all, really. Both video conferencing and face to face meetings have their place and I don't think people are particularly good at working out which suits.

The key thing for me is to have as few people in the meeting as possible. You get the outcome you need and if that needs to be shared more widely you publish it. We spend far too much time in meetings rather than doing the actual work.

I agree Phooey. I spend all day in meetings and the best ones are where there’s only two or three of you. Any more than that and it tends to be that people end up waffling on about stuff not on the agenda.

My observation, after 20 years in an office job is similar. People have their default…whether it’s an in person meeting, conference/video call, phone call, e-Mail, instant message…whatever, they’ll always default that method without any though to whether it’s the best method for the situation.

Yes I planned the chaos at B'ham airport and the chaos & 2 hour flight delay at Dublin airport.
There is always the risk of delays when travelling by air. You accepted that risk when you set off because you thought the client was worth it.

I don't see where the problem is here.

My attitude to meetings tends to be - to quote a great man - we talk about it for twenty minutes and decide I was right.

Obviously but in addition to the delay there was chaos & massive queues at both airports so I had a rant about it on the rant thread, I'm sure that's ok

30c+ in the UK is definitely warmer than 30c+ abroad!

I can cope with heat abroad no problem, I hate it when it's super warm in the UK.
30+ temperatures in Stuttgart are quite normal at this time of year.

This weekend is projected at 34/35 degrees.

The locals are well used to such things, and consolidate themselves with significant quantities of Bier.

I'm sat in my glass roofed conservatory trying to pretend I'm in Greece. Must get those knackered units changed.
