The NEW/"Lesser Known" Music Thread

I did the Cambridge Folk Festival a few times in the past and it fits well with the kind of folk and world music that's seen there. If you look back I already posted a few of the bands that appeared there like Shooglenifty and Nickel Creek.

Good on you Red and them, they are very good at what they do, it’s just not my bag. :)

I’ve played with one of their members in the past and he’s a great musician but I can’t get into their music. It’s of another century and appeals to a small minority.
I didn’t like The Levellers either for the same reasons and that was fuck knows how many years ago.

Bizarrely I've always loved that type of music, but when I auditioned for such bands I'd just kill it

Everything I play always ends up sounding like punk or metal regardless, I'll pull back, go for an indie sound, and soften it all up, but it still comes out wrong

Que sera. Could probably get away with a few Dropkick Murphy's songs. Although I'd still be instinctively throwing pinch harmonics and and too many blues bends in with the riffs :faceslap:

We are what we are, Alf. As King Billy once said

I have a hang up with acoustic guitar music, acoustic has to be exceptionally good, like classical, Spanish or jazz. If somebody rocks up playing basic C G and F or I, IV, V formulas it just reminds me of my English teacher in school that used to get his acoustic out and bore everyone to death.

I bought a guitar to make noise, rebel, offend, thought provoke, make interesting sounds and not comply within the barriers of tradition.

The Weeknd's amazing voice WITH 80's sythpop instrumentals. Insane, sick ass album.

Incredibly auto tuned voice. Can’t stand that style, it’s annoying ruins the music for me, but it’s the norm in pop these days.

In the Facebook groups I’m in I get “acoustic punk”, “folk punk” or even worse, “acoustic folk punk” which is just done dude banging out a few chords and singing badly about had sad life is. Utter bullshit!

You get the odd exception but generally, acoustic versions of some other genre are pointless.

I can dig those people who do all the crazy tapping, harmonic, rhythmic thing though. I don’t know what it’s called but that stuff is the nuts.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela play accoustic with a fair amount of guitar tapping style with some noticable flamenco influence if that's the kind of thing you mean.

I saw them at Cambridge some years ago and they are fantastic. I was trying to count how many fingers they had because I couldn't believe they could play all the notes with 4 plus a thumb. :)

They are brilliant. Been a fan for several years. 11:11 is a brilliant album, nothing since has quite measured up to it. Amazing live too - she is quite possibly the greatest rhythm guitarist in history.

Cmon mate its not THAT BAD. Don't know how it can ruin that incredible instrumental behind the voice too.

They are. I would probably go for the self titled Rodrigo Y Gabriela album myself as their best, but that's probably down to the memories of seeing them perform the tracks at Cambridge. They's just released the album at the time I think. I was right at the front of the crowd so I could sneak some photos of the bands. :)

Don’t you think it takes any personality, nuance and feeling out of the vocals?

It just sounds really generic to me, you wouldn’t know who is singing that if you didn’t know. Could one of many modern acts who do that style.

I’m not entirely sure but a lot of this album is just his voice.

New-ish and new to me. Kind of between indie rock and punk rock? Warm, fuzzy guitars, some cool lead guitar and solos... bit of Buzzcocks/Husker Du vibe I reckon.

/it might just be my pc speakers, but those drums are very forward in the sound mix- intrusively so to my mind. Otherwise I liked the guitaar riffs and vocals.
