As someone who has had part-time jobs over my youth and even when I've been a bit more hard-up as an adult I think it's so important for kids to get out there. Even if just for the life experience as much as the extra cash.

I'll certainly be making sure my daughter does in about 10 years...although by then kids will probably be even more spoilt and entitled than they already are.

Where I live which was traditionally classed as a low immigration area nearly every supermarket / minimart you go in to 90% of the security are not English. If you go to the docks it is the same. Where I go to the gym all the cleaning staff and 50% of the waiting staff are non English.

This must have affected the youth employment market in some respect. You didn’t get kids being security guards when I was a kid (I’m not sure they were so prevalent). But certainly a lot of the starter jobs are now being done, just not by 16-20’s.

In my experience though the work is there but a lot of local kids are too f***ing lazy and entitled to even contemplate it.

The kids might need a bit of extra cash, the immigrant workers need it to survive. There's a big difference there in how the two demographics approach the job and whether they're willing to do overtime or go the extra mile etc.

I always think if you want work enough you'll find it but there's a snobbery in this country about which jobs are acceptable for 'a local person' to do. For example where I am there are a lot of migrant workers on the farms, picking daffodils or veg. It's f***ing hard graft I imagine but the money they get is way more than they'd get back home. A kid here would rather do f*** all than get up at 4am to spend a day in a field picking.

I used to pick mushrooms in Polly tunnels and it was hard hot work for not much money. It did make me realise that I didn't want to keep doing that and I would never want to go back to that again. A bit of fear keeps you motivated. Unless you have a work ethic and the benefits are there the motivation isn't there which appears to be the main problem

I’m going to Amsterdam (again) at the end of September, which is Tony’s HQ - I’m quite disappointed that I can’t go on the boat trip (wrong days - next time I’ll rectify that!).

The big question is why are we bringing in or allowing unskilled migrant workers to do jobs that either don’t really need doing or need very little skill. I don’t think anyone minds someone coming to the country to fill a skill gap, although we should get better at filtering the right kids in to the jobs and industries we need. But to have millions out of work and some supposedly unable to get work when there is clearly work out there is insane.

There are clearly many of our youth and older who don’t fancy it but I don’t believe that is the same for all of them.
