There's trouble in paradise. And I
think the opportunity to take the mick out of the German national team is being lost somewhat in Gareth Southgate debate.

The World Cup dead certs finished almost dead last. Multiple winner of national team player of year quit in the messy fall out. Spanked 3-0 yesterday by a Dutch side that can't make a tournament, and on course to be relegated to Europe's div 2. World champions France away next...

When did die mannschaft become the national elf?

They always have been.

Mannschaft simply means „team“ in German.

Many commentators used the derivative „Die Mannschaft“ as in The Team (my emphasis) to refer to the National side. And the DFB adopted that some years ago.

Equally popular is Nationalelf - literally, „National Eleven“.

Many Germans think „Die Mannschaft“ is just a little bit pretentious and so prefer Nationalelf

My German stretches that far. It's more the name as a brand I'm curious about. There seems to have been a conscious effort over the years, probably by Adidas, to push 'die Mannschaft' as a globally recognised brand name for the team.

Like 'the All Blacks' or 'the Pumas'. People around the world will now refer to the German men's football team as 'die Mannschaft' whether they speak any German or not. I don't remember that being the case thirty years ago, when I imagine it was a name just used in Germany. Now it's printed on the shirts. When England played Germany last year it's was promoted as England v die Mannschaft.

Nationalelf I haven't heard. I'm not sure which name I prefer. But the image 'the national elf' conjures in your head as an English speaker, I like more.

Both beat USMNT as an attempt at branding a football team.

It’s true that the DFB have been at the forefront of „Die Mannschaft“ branding - the name is embroidered into the back of the current set of national side kits as well.

This is in part why the „Nationalelf“ Name has become popular, as the DFB have in recent seasons raised the ire of many fans, with some questionable decisions (Bundesliga games on Monday nights, and failing to stand up to the Red Bull company being two prominent recent ones) so many fans simply refuse to use „Die Mannschaft“ as a rebuke to the DFB, and instead, use „Nationalelf“.

So what you're saying is Die Mannschaft has gone limp?

They need to get Pele on board.

Mods, can the title of this thread be change 'the demise of die Mannschaft' please.

Better alliteration. And the current title sounds a bit too Brexity.

Roll on the international break. Only one more week to wait

It’s strange to see a once powerful football nation become second rate when compared to the likes of England.

Not only are the Kraut National team shite but the bundle league is pretty average & I can’t see s German team winning the European cup any time soon.

Shame innit
