Tendayi Darikwa

I might have got the wrong player but I'm sure that he kept a very decent right back out of the side. Do you know who the right back was before Lowton? Maybe Lowton was injured in pre season or something, I don't f***ing know!
I remember my gaffer who is a Burnley fan telling me that he'd kept someone very decent out if the side.
I'm standing by him now anyroads!

No that was his first season at Burnley. Darikwa didn’t appear at all in the league in his second season.

Lowton joined at the same time as Darikwa.

Before Lownton and Dariwka arrived it was Kieran Trippier iirc.

I know he was at the AFCON.

As far as I can see, he missed 2 friendlies (not several) as he started the 3rd v Atromitos (so wasn't rested for long). Cash then played the next 3 with Darikwa on the bench. Darikwa then got injured sometime between the final friendly and the first league game.

However my post was in response to the assertion that the only reason Cash was played RB was because we were forced into it as TD got injured. I dont think this was the case.

The reason Cash was starting at RB was because Darikwa wasn’t there and there was no alternative and then when he was there it was because Darikwa cut his break short to join the squad. You’re implication that it was in spite of Darikwa being available isn’t an accurate reflection. Lamouchi himself said on 29/07/19, days before Darikwa’s injury, and after that run of 3 games you refer to:

“I am very happy with Darikwa. With his mentality and quality, he is number one in this position.”

I know Darikwa started that game in Greece, but he was taken off after an hour and largely limited after that. The club didn’t just go “you’re back now, so play 90 minutes every game”. They were specifically limiting his game time to fewer minutes because Darikwa had roughly a two week break between the ACON and the trip to greece. After Darikwa’s injury Lamouchi spoke about wanting a right back and the club then spent 2 million quid on Jenkinson who then replaced Cash before getting injured.

It’s pretty clear that Sabri didn’t see Cash in that role as anything more than cover until at least a month or so into the season. After his first choice and later replacement both got injured

He showed nothing worth £2m before getting injured, and nothing since his return.
If Jenkinson was recruited to be first choice then the scouts appear to have been misled as to his quality, and the Club was robbed.

But the club DID spend 2 million quid on him. That’s the point. Regardless of your opinion on the player it is something that the club did do. At this level clubs don’t generally spend that much on a player they don’t intend to play. And a couple of weeks after signing he started 3 games back to back ahead of Cash, before getting injured which gave Cash the chance to return to RB.

And anyway, that’s nonsense because he was one of the standouts in our away win at Fulham. But that doesn’t fit the narrative for the overreactionaries.

Regardless of your view, Jenkinson was clearly bought here to be first choice. But his injury and Cash’s ascension left the manager with little choice. Which ultimately benefitted us as Matty Cash drove so much of what we did.

To be fair a lot of people thought Jack Robinson was shit and not good enough for our starting 11, but he got a move to Sheff United and is playing Premier League football.

There was no 'implication' in my initial post. Someone said we were forced into using Cash as a RB because of Tendayi's injury. This quite clearly wasn't the case as he was being used as a RB prior to the injury.

I then stated I thought Cash would've continued at RB regardless of Darikwa's injury because I thought he looked a much better player based on those early showings. Sabri may have considered otherwise but I think it's clear he considered Cash a RB option regarless of TD's fitness.

Obviously I dont have detailed knowledge of last years pre-season plans like yourself but you seem to be reading far too much into what was a pretty obvious point.

If Hughton can entice Darikwa over the half way line & improve his delivery, he might get in front of Christie, who does turn like Jack Hobbs & give you the shits defensively.

Think theres pros & cons to both.

Yet we'll keep Christie and pay his, presumably, higher wages. Great, yet another wonderful decision.
They're both crap tbh

Christie needs to go back, Jenkinson is adequate (at least he can defend, and actually looked better going forward recently too) with the kids as cover.

Jenkinson may well be better than Christie, but his injury record throughout his career is horrendous. Unfortunately we can't rely on someone who is always a strong gust of wind away from a season ending injury.

With Darikwa out of contract soon and Christie's loan ending, hopefully we'll bring in someone half decent who isn't made of glass to fill the right back spot in the summer.

I thought Darikwa looked ok before his injury. 10x better than Christie at least.

It's not that bad.

Don't forget he wasn't ever really first choice at Arsenal, he got time in the side when Sagna broke his leg, which is most of his appearances. He then played most of the first season on loan to West Ham before doing his ACL in the 2nd. He then missed 4 months with a dislocated shoulder on loan at Birmingham before not getting his place back under Monk.

He apparently also had an ankle injury last season, but I doubt he would have played instead of Matty anyway.

I rate Tendayi, but he's very similar to Julian Bennett - got the passion but doesn't have the skill needed to push on.
I agree. He's an obvious 3rd choice right back currently. We don't need 3.
