There did used be a thread on here that started as a model dicussion of the Hegelian Dialectic.

It turned into a fight thread about who was the hardest anti-thesis boot boy in the 80s.

It got deleted after Kierkegaard offered a bare knuckle straightener to PoppeRed; iirc there was didactic barney about whether God could be found Hyson Green Asda carpark or whether this kind of pugilism could only go beyond conscious if it happened up Bendigo Hill.

We lost some good posters to that episode. Camus, Bertrand Russell and OckhamRed are all missed.
I thought there was a Heisenberg thread but now I'm not so sure.

Watching the Charity Shield this evening and it struck me that Coops wants to play the Liverpool way as against the rather more plodding passing style of Man City . Quick movement, slick speedy passing and penetration.

I believe Kierkegaard was referencing this LTLF issue when he said "It belongs to the imperfection of everything human that man can only attain his desire by passing through its opposite".

Another ... is punctuation actually necessary? Or can you just work it out if you can be arsed?

I only watched last 20 minutes but I was impressed with the hastle press then the speed Forest tried to attack. It may not have worked all the time but with quality new players picking up the system then we only get better.

My wishlist for the coming weeks:

- Another number 10 or versatile attacker - MGW if we are greedy, but needs to be that quality
- Big tank at CM that can tackle - Prime Yaya Toure would be useful - would be worth investing heavy in this position IMO. But I wouldn't mind Garner either, another late addition.
- Two strikers, 1 real top draw one, dunno who - and I would still go for Davis late in the window despite his injury concerns for the other slot.
- Another RWB - we need proper backup, we can't make do with that position - I am thinking that Kabore from Man City, he hasn't gone anywhere yet? If Williams gets injured we are knackered.
- Possibly LWB - short term option? Seems the club are after one, could make the difference even for a few months just having another Spence that side. All about the money being right with that one.

So 5 more, maybe 6 at a push.

I think LWB is higher on the priority list than that for me. But agree: MGW, Dennis (Okafor), Vranckx (Stach), Moreno (Cornet), and Kabore then we are set.

Concern is I’ve named about £80mil worth of talent there and we also are limited on time considering we added 1 player all this week and he still hasn’t been announced

Yep it will cost @RedSpoons , but if we wanna stay up we are gonna have to pay it. You look on our bench today and there is only Taiwo that could come on with attacking intent. A few injuries in attacking areas and we will be well short.

Thankfully windows are falling kind this season with september & the WC leaves a short gap between windows which could work in our favour as we build the squad.

Sander Berge's still at Sheff Utd and is a good player with PL experience but I think they're asking silly money - Leeds were sniffing but nothings happened, apparently he has a £35m release clause in his contract. Might as well be a Santa Claus ... no way he's worth that kinda cash

Oh I agree - the lack of options is very concerning. Yes we have some depth for injuries at CB and at a push CM, but no one that will impact the game or warrant a change scheme or create urgency.

From a starters POV, I think we get away with the 11 if we get in a LB for Toff (and Mangala is confirmed), but then we have no one pushing to start beyond that or any real contingency for poor play. The squad look option-less.

I believe we are both big MGW advocates and for me that’s because he is not only a fundamentally good player with a unique attacking skill set, but also gives Cooper so many options at CM, CAM, LW, even CF.

We need guys like him and Cornet, who in isolation look expensive but are a level above what we have in their main role, and also negate the need for additional signings at their secondary and even tertiary positions.

Hoping for 2 or 3 more after Mangala at least to flesh the bench out but we might have to ride it out abit for the first few games as our business is slowing down a little bit now. I suspect we'll be biding our time and think we'll be quite active at the end of the window

Another good run out today against a deceptively fast breaking technical side... While O'Brien and Colback aren't the answer together, I'm pleased we now have Colback in his prime in the form of 'second Jack' O'Brien... He'll do well for us.

Still think Brennan will finish the season as our biggest asset... nice to see him linking up well for the goal with Ameobi.

I worry about us in terms of height and strength. We have quite a fast team but sometimes you have to be physical and play in the air to be the more technically gifted possession teams. Aside from maybe Awoniyi, we lack that.

Here's where I think we're short.
  • Defensive Midfield. We need a destroyer here, someone that is going to do the ugly side of the game and smash through players. We need a Samba Sow-type figure. I think William Carvalho would be an excellent choice for this and I'd love to see us sign him. He's not an assister/goalscorer like the others, his role is usually to sit there, break it up and give it to the ball players to make stuff happen. He's not Samba Sow size but he does a similar role.

  • Centre Forward. We could use a target man to be able to play off of. Someone who is comfortable with their back to goal and can bring others into the play running off him. That gives us flexibility from going from two up top to one. Johnson is the arriving late/pace to burn, Surridge is the technical finisher and Awoniyi is the powerhouse. Keinan Davis, I don't think he'd perhaps score as many in the Premierleague but he'd create goals for the others because he's hard to muscle off the ball and he's great with his feet to draw in defenders.

  • Winger. Besides Johnson, we don't really have another quality wide player at the club and chances are he gets injured at some point or loses form, we need adequate backup. Mighten ain't it.

Would Lingard take Johnno's role if he was out injured?

I share the view that at the right price, Davis still makes structural sense for the list, too.

I think we've had a very good transfer window so far, we're essentially rebuilding 3/4's of the team. A couple more still to go.

For me we're in need of 4 more as a minimum and this is based on Mangala having signed.

LWB as we don't know how long Richards will be out for and I'm not sure Toffolo is up to the level of week in week out top flight football. (Moreno)

CM as we need a nasty bugger in there who will break up play and keep it simple. (Carvalho or Camara)

Attacking midfielder (either wide or central) to have a threat in the opposition box, preferably one that can deliver a dead ball. (MGW or Cornet)

Striker so someone who will give defences a headache. Ideally one with a killer instinct but these costs tens of millions. Would be happy for Davis to sign or Dennis.

Basically we need a squad when it's not going well we have some options to bring. I'm sure that every other team we play this season will have 20 senior players in their match day squads and can call upon 5 good subs that impact games. As things stand we're relying on Taylor, Cafu, Laryea etc and kids off the bench, players not even good enough last season.

So if we add the 4 positions I mentioned we're looking at for a regular match day squad if everyone is available:

Henderson
Hennessey

Worrall
Cook
Mckenna
Niakhate
Biancone
Williams
Richards
Toffolo
NEW LB

Yates
O'Brien
Mangala
Lingard
NEW DCM
NEW AM

Johnson
Surridge
Awoniyi
NEW ST

Actually makes 21 that so with a new LB you might expect Toffolo to drop out. Then there's Colback, Cafu and the more fringe players beyond that. Obviously it's still fairly small as one or two injuries and you're into putting bomb squadders on the bench.

I'm afraid some of you are getting a bit greedy. My take so far:

1. There was much restructuring work to be done, considering the state of your roster after the loanees' departure. You had a massive disadvantage compared even to other promoted teams, let alone established Premier clubs.

2. Money has been spent; I read somewhere you're in the top five ever for expenditure of clubs promoted to the Premier. And so far it appears to have been spent wisely.

3. You seem to have a competitive team in place. Too many new players will need time to gel. This is more important than more transfers at the moment.

4. There is room in your squad of 25 for three or four more transfers, if I calculated correctly. It is not realistic to expect any British club to have concluded its transfer business by July 31. There will be a flurry of transfers in the last days of the window, as in every transfer window, and there will be opportunities to fill in any gaps in late August.

I see no reason for unease at the moment. All you have to do now is trust the process.

Don’t expect Colback or Toff to be anywhere near a new 💣 squad!

Jack will be our James Milner
Jack Colback will have a role to play this season, certainly.

If Forest need to see-out a game, who better to bring on for a steadying influence in midfield?
