Striker search

Interestingly after me mentioning about a striker coach some weeks ago on here I've just heard Defoe on Talksport. He said after working with the youth teams at Spurs he was looking to move into working with the first team there but he was never given the opportunity and he's desperate to get back in somewhere to do that.

If I were Forest I'd be getting straight onto him. Having someone of his quality as a coach to work with the strikers could be hugely beneficial.

Edit: Just found the clip. It's an interesting chat. I know I'm striker heavy but I love listening to pros that have been at the top end and hearing about what helped them through their careers, especially at the beginning of when they were struggling. Worth a listen.

We bought Butlin on the strength of a good scoring record at Luton although he was largely indifferent, if not poor for us.

Cloughie initially paired him with Peter Withe until a defeat at Oldham where I remember seeing him miss a couple of sitters. We played away in the Anglo-Scottish Cup during the following midweek and Cloughie unsurprisingly dropped him for Tony Woodcock, and the rest is well-documented history.
I went to Oldham as well Frank and we were poor that day (I don’t think Clough was there and Peter Taylor took charge).

We had lost Terry Curran the week before with a serious injury in a 5-2 win over Burnley and Clough said ‘promotion has just hobbled out of the door’.

The introduction of Woodcock was the ‘Eureka’ moment for me.I doubt if Clough and Taylor really realised at the time that his partnership with Robbo would prove to be pivotal to our glory years.
We had suddenly become a mainly left sided based attacking unit whereas before Curran was our main outlet on the right and we were a bit too open with Robbo isolated at times (O’Neill playing tighter on the right and
cutting in was a better bet especially in away games).

I suppose it was a bit like a chemist mixing potions in a laboratory and finally getting the right mixture.

The other intriguing aspect was that Woody was largely regarded at that time as a left-winger rather than a striker, although that wasn't how he saw himself, having always preferred to play up top. That possibly goes some way to explain why he grabbed the opportunity in the way he did.

It's an interesting point though - would someone like Defoe be able to coach strikers into top players even considering he was a top striker himself? It isn't always the case someone who is (or was) amazing at something can tell others how to do the same thing, especially when his finishing was instinctive.

Yes there's loads. You can learn about their movement, they can teach you what cues to look for off the defender or goalkeeper, they can teach you which areas to pull defenders into which they don't like.

Even little aspects which amazingly not all strikers are aware of like when you're moving onto a ball at the far side of the area to ensure your chest is pointing to what now becomes the far post post for you. Waiting for for the defender to lunge to block so that it opens their legs up to fire through.

There's hundreds of little components which all add up. I used to watch players all the time in training, Dougie Freedman was a great help to me, partly because he was willing to but also because there was so much knowledge to be harvested if you listened to them.

And this is not just a problem at the first team, it seems to be a general problem at the club at the moment. There is no natural goalscorers at U21 or U18 either. Just have a look at the topscorerlist at PL2 and the U18 League and see where you find the first Forest-player, it's not looking good....

If Defoe could coach Lucca into becoming a Conference level striker he'd have worked absolute miracles.

Media has it that Villa are open to Watkins moving on (Everton apparently) I'd be absolutely all over that. I know he's 30 but he is a goal ticket, roughly 1 in 2.5 in the prem so call it 15-18ish a season. We'd be in the top half if we had someone with those returns. I'm all for potential but someone who can maintain our status whilst the new ones come through is gold dust. He should also be on the plane as Kanes number 2 IMO.
£30m ish? Compare that to others we've spent that amount on it's a no brainer (or nearly, Nketia? 😮)
