I was a doubter (of ability, not effort nor attitude) right up to the end of the Hughton era. He'd shown flashes of improvement in passing but reverted backwards at the beginning of last season.

I won't doubt the lad again. Doesn't matter what league you're in, getting smashed isn't fun, nor is having someone running in from the edge of the box attacking the space, both of which Ryan excels at.

What's the latest on his injury?

I'd be more confident with Yates alongside O'Brien than Colback & O'Brien on Saturday.

Disappointed nobody has owned up and voted for Gravy, yet.

Come on, you know who you are.

Not seeing Yates in the training video unless I am totally missing him, presume he will not be back for the weekend.

I'll admit I doubted him-and whilst I applaud his constant improvement, I'll be really interested to see how he gets on in the prem. I think he will cope, but only if he has the right people alongside him. The key for me is that hes not the lynchpin in midfield and plays a specific role suited to strengths. Lets see....

I do see a role for Yates this season but Cooper's big gripe from the first game was our ball retention, that isn't a strength of Yates'. If/when we sign Freuler I can't see regular starts for Ryan.

Statistically, he was the top performing Championship midfielder...
(Not my analysis - https://breakingthelines.com/data-a...mpionship-centre-midfielder-purely-from-data/)

So if we hadn't been promoted, particularly given his age, he would be one that the Premier League teams who pay attention to stats would be looking at to bring in and break into the Premier League.

Yet a pretty good number of folks here still think he isn't good enough.

Yates came on leaps and bounds last season. He was never the most gifted with ball at feet but even that improved. Yes we need better technical players but there is also part of the role to close down spaces fast and that's his forte. He certainly deserves his shot although the signings show that competition will be fierce in the middle this season. Players like Freuler are more of a complete package.

One thing is for sure. If he isn't good enough, it'll soon become apparent at this level.

It'll will take him time to adjust but he'll make the step up. My biggest concern with Yates is his lack of preseason, though a few early iffy performances will fire him up to prove people wrong. Again.

You're going to have to accept he's a damn sight better than many of us thought he was, whether he's good enough at this level or not.

No need to keep trying to run him down at every opportunity.
I do accept that.
I’m not running him down at every opportunity-in case you hadn’t noticed this is a discussion forum. Not much point in every thread being a collective wanking off session about every player.
It’s not unreasonable to have a counter point.

Give over.

It's patently obvious you want him to not be good enough, or deemed not to be good enough by the management just so you can crow that he's not up to it.

It's pathetic.

We should be better than that.

It's not obvious to me...

Anyone with a differing opinion on here gets jumped on by the clique. Been apparent ever since I joined.

Utter tosh.

You quite often find the 'clique' as you call them (not that there is one, just long term posters) arguing amongst themselves. Let alone with newer posters.

But you don't want to see that.
