Richmond Mamah Laryea

Cheers, I haven't subscribed to The Athletic, and I really should. Think I've got a subscription to basically everything else going, Sky, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, etc
If you can, wait till the start of the season, they will probably have some sort of introductory offer

I have been paying £1 for well over a year now. They will always do promos.

To be honest I would probably be happy paying full price for it, they are churning out the Forest content now as well.

Back to Laryea. Its an odd one. He looked pretty good in short cameos last season and certainly fits the Coops model of a pacy attacking FB. So its hard to understand why they are looking at a loan for him, or put another way why we don't feel hes going to get reasonable game time next season. As a senior international I doubt hes going to improve so a loan must be to help his prep for the WC.
Looking at it positively it must mean there are going to be plenty of signings because wee haven't got the bums on seats to allow this without replacements....

Strange call, not because we'll miss him as a player (we don't really know much about him) but it leaves us even more threadbare. Our tiny squad is getting smaller not bigger at the moment...

I think Laryea was one of those purchases that looked a good idea at the time...
He was probably an opportunistic acquisition to replace Spence in the event we missed out on promotion last season.
With little opportunity to prove himself in the Championship, it looks like too much of a risk to throw him in at the deep end in the Premiership.
A season playing regularly for a top end Championship club may be the light the blue touch paper season, like Spence's last season, and it will be us looking to realise £20m for him...

what was the point in buying him then? that means we’ll need to buy two right backs, unless we actually sign AMN. i thought he looked the part every time he was subbed on, weird one.

i know this is probably due to Canada’s inclusion in the world cup and him needing play time but jeez.

If he wasn't deemed as up to it the level below he won't be up to it now - Colback coming in to cover his position (when Lowe got injured) tells you why he's off out on loan imo.

Very strange if true. Looked more than decent when he came on. Pacey & attack minded, decent passer- everything Cooper likes in fullbacks. thought he might be pushing for a first team place tbh.

We didn't really see enough of him to know how good he really is (or isn't), the one thing I would say is that although he looked good on the ball going forwards I thought he looked very naive positionally when tasked with defending

Definitely a flaw you can't carry in the premier league, and at 27 years old he's not exactly at an early stage of development

I think he was bought in as our Championship replacement for Spence. The player was available for a reasonable fee so it made sense at the time, we just happened to steam through the league like a wrecking ball and ended up in the top division which makes him obsolete for now

The Worrall thing on his debut was interesting - didn't seem to want to give him the ball. I can't judge him based on the little we've seen; thought his movement off the ball looked a bit naive at times? Perhaps his performances in training didn't back up the stats we signed him off?

I thought in that game he was timing his attacking runs really poorly. Just went straight up to the defensive line before the player with the ball could look up and pass it into his path. I don’t know if it was him just being overly keen to impress but I guess that’s what you mean by naive movement?

A lot of the times Worrall didn’t give him the ball were because of it.

Probably also worth noting that he’s not first choice for Canada, more first reserve on both sides.

Nobody has really seen enough of him in a Forest shirt to judge though. He’s played what, about 100 mins?

We’ll have to see who our signings are. Not just the blockbuster ones, but the squad depth ones too. We’ve certainly showed more ambition than I expected so far - if we end up with 4 cracking players at wing-back, then makes sense that Laryea moves on.

Yeah, that's how I had it.

As for sides I thought he had history of playing both?

Definitely watched a couple games where was on the left for Canada, though he did come on in the recent internationals on the right.

He is definitely a more natural right-sided player, but he also played on the left a little for Toronto as they tried to get their two best fullbacks on the pitch at the same time. For Canada, when Alphonso Davies is on the left wing that can open up a lot of space for a right-footed, attacking (wing)back like Laryea. Which I'm sure is a large part of the appeal of playing him on that side. That being said it seems clear that Cooper sees him on the right, possibly exclusively.

I wouldn't call him a bench player for Canada. To my mind Canada has 12 men vying for the best starting 11 and while I think Laryea will be the odd-man out, he is very close to being a starter and Canada opts to play three in the back (which hasn't been the case recently) I think he's in the team. I think he will start at least one match in Qatar and could feature in all three group stage matches.

I was looking forward to seeing him play some in the EPL (even if it was off the bench), but he needs playing time heading into the World Cup, so if that means a loan, I hope it works out for him.
